Freddie Prinze Jr. arrived in Los Angeles with a backpack and the weight of a famous last name that carried weight in movie credits. His entry into the industry was no bed of roses, nor a red carpet rolled out by family inheritance. His father died when he was just a baby, and that shaped his relationship with fame from the very first minute.

In 1995, he landed his first role, with a single line, on the series Family Matters. But his looks fit perfectly with what teen magazines of the era were looking for. He soon lined up auditions for projects that wanted fresh, affordable faces.

Horror changed everything.

In 1997, he appeared in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and the project grossed more than $125 million worldwide. That shoot earned him status as a teen star and also introduced him to Sarah Michelle Gellar. The chemistry between the two wasn't instant, but it became the most stable relationship of their generation.

They married in 2002 in a private ceremony in Mexico.

The Weight of Being a Heartthrob

The romantic comedy She's All That hit theaters in 1999, confirming that audiences wanted to see him on the big screen. The script was simple, but his work with Rachael Leigh Cook unexpectedly clicked at the global box office. The movie became a benchmark for its genre without ever trying to be one.

It grossed $103 million on a budget of just ten. As a result, major studios started sending him scripts built on the same mold of the likable boy with a good heart. Typecasting was a real threat that could devour his career before he turned thirty.

He turned down many of those roles.

In 2002 and 2004, he played Fred Jones in the Scooby-Doo adaptations alongside his wife. Critics were harsh on these kids' productions, but their box office success let Prinze Jr. pursue other paths far from Hollywood's main spotlight. He began prioritizing his hobbies over big-money contracts.

Scripts and lightsabers

His passion for professional wrestling took him somewhere unusual for an actor of his profile. In 2008, he joined WWE as part of the creative team and returned in 2010 as a producer and promo director. He enjoyed writing stories for others more than acting them out in front of the camera himself.

He wasn't after critical acclaim but rather exploring his own personal interests.

In 2014, he voiced Kanan Jarrus in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. The role lasted until 2018 and helped him connect with a completely different fan base. His portrayal of a surviving Jedi was praised for the depth it brought to a show originally aimed at younger audiences.

And his voice ended up carrying more weight than his 1990s image.

During 2021, he took part in the revival of Punky Brewster, playing the heroine's ex-husband on Peacock. In 2022, he shot the movie Christmas with You for Netflix, directed by Gabriela Tagliavini. It was a one-off return to the genre that made him famous, but his range showed clear maturity.

His contract for that project included a specific clause on filming schedules so he wouldn't interfere with his family life in Los Angeles.
