Greg Kinnear shouldn't have worked in movies. In the early nineties, his face was synonymous with sharp TV sarcasm thanks to Talk Soup. He was a guy who poked fun at television from inside television. But in 1995, Sydney Pollack decided that this blond, boy-next-door type was the right fit for the remake of Sabrina.
Nobody expected him to hold his own opposite Jack Nicholson.
In 1997, he played Simon Bishop in As Good as It Gets. That role as a vulnerable artist earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and changed how the industry saw him. He went from being a talking head on cable TV to an actor with a rare ability to humanize supporting characters who might have been flat in other hands.
And the gamble paid off.
His career wasn't built on big action blockbusters. He specialized in ordinary men caught in situations that overwhelm them. In 2002, he starred in Auto Focus under the direction of Paul Schrader. He brought Bob Crane to life in a dry, dark performance that shattered his image as the all-American nice guy. The film grossed just two million dollars in the United States but cemented his status as a cult actor.
The arrival of Little Miss Sunshine in 2006 confirmed that his place was in ensemble films. He played a failed self-help guru with a mix of pathos and dignity that few actors of his generation can pull off. Because Kinnear handles failure on screen better than success. So over the following decade, he moved with ease between independent drama and studio comedies that needed an emotional anchor.
The risk was obvious.
In 2011, he decided to try his luck in prestige television, playing John F. Kennedy in the miniseries The Kennedys. The production faced distribution problems and mixed reviews for its historical accuracy. Still, his work was nominated for an Emmy. That project proved his face fit well in serious biographical drama without resorting to cheap impersonation.
Many of his later projects focused on the streaming and cable television market. In 2014 he starred in the American version of Rake for Fox. The series didn't make it past its first season due to low ratings. Despite the setback, the actor kept a steady work pace, alternating small roles in big productions with lead roles in low-budget films.
In 2022, he starred in the miniseries Black Bird for Apple TV+. His portrayal of police chief Brian Miller brought the actor back onto critics' radar. It's a restrained performance in which economy of gesture replaces grand speeches. The industry no longer cast him to lead romantic comedies but to bring real weight to crime stories and complex family dramas.
Before filming, he tends to analyze the script's structure to avoid excessive sentimentality. In 2024, he released the film Sight, in which he plays Dr. Misha Bartnovsky. It's a biographical drama that explores advances in eye surgery. Filming took place mainly in Vancouver under the direction of Andrew Hyatt.
In 2024, he joined the cast of the CBS series Fire Country as Sheriff Mickey Fox. His contract covers appearances in seven episodes of the second season. The production has an estimated budget of five million dollars per episode and is filmed on location in British Columbia.
