From the Runway to the Set

Hande Erçel didn't end up on television by chance. In 2012, she won the Miss Civilization Turkey pageant, and that title opened the doors of talent agencies in Istanbul. But her real goal was never the runway.

I wanted to act.

Her first roles were modest and went almost unnoticed by critics. In 2013, she took part in Tatar Ramazan, and a year later she appeared in Çalıkuşu. These were brief appearances that offered little hint of the impact she would make years later.

Because the Turkish market constantly demands new faces, Erçel had to go through endless auditions until a project finally fit her profile. In 2014, she filmed Hayat Ağacı, a series that didn't last long on air but helped casting directors take note of her name.

The Rise of Romantic Comedy

Her massive breakthrough came in 2015 with Güneşin Kızları. She played Selin Yılmaz, and audiences connected with her on-screen image right away. That was when brands began to see her as an unbeatable advertising draw.

In 2016 she starred in Aşk Laftan Anlamaz. The series did very well outside Turkey and built an international fan base that grew exponentially. But the industry kept questioning her acting technique in dramatic moments.

Critics focused on her expressiveness. She responded with more work, and in 2017 she filmed Siyah İnci (Black Pearl), a drama in which she tried to move away from her image as an innocent girl. The series did not have the reach it hoped for and was canceled after just 20 episodes.

The industry is merciless when it comes to failure.

Online buzz doesn't always translate into prestige. After that slump, Erçel became more selective about her projects. In 2019, she took part in Halka, a police drama that allowed her to explore a much more restrained and professional style.

The Phenomenon Across 52 Countries

Everything changed in 2020. The premiere of Sen Çal Kapımı was a sales milestone for the production company MF Yapım. The chemistry with her co-star went beyond the screen, and the series was sold to more than 50 territories, including Spain, Italy and much of Latin America.

During the filming of this series, her Instagram account passed 30 million followers. Her market value soared as a result. In 2021 the production ended, but her image was already appearing on billboards around the world.

In 2023, she went for a darker role in Bambaşka Biri. She played a prosecutor in a thriller about personality disorders and unsolved crimes. It was a risky move for an actress whom the general public associated exclusively with light romantic stories.

The movie Mest-i Aşk finally premiered in 2024 after several delays in post-production. In this historical drama, she played Kimia Khatun. It was her first major period project, with carefully crafted visuals and an international cast.

In 2024, she moved to the beaches of Çeşme to film Rüzgara Bırak. Written by Ceylan Naz Baycan, the script brought her back to the world of dramatic comedy (this time alongside Barış Arduç). The production was designed specifically for distribution on digital platforms.

The actress has been under an exclusive contract with Disney Plus since 2022, which limits her appearances on free-to-air television channels.
