Burak Deniz

Building a Tough Face

Burak Deniz was born in Istanbul in 1991 but grew up in the city of İzmit. Her entry into acting was almost an accident of youth. In 2011, she made her debut in the series Kolej Günlüğü without really knowing how to handle media attention. She was barely twenty years old and had a bone structure that the camera instinctively adored.

The project that put him on casting directors' radar was Medcezir, which ran between 2013 and 2015. He played Aras there. He wasn't the main lead, but his physical presence was hard for producers to ignore. In the Turkish industry, charisma often counts for more than a long resume.

The camera always sought him out.

In 2016, he starred in Aşk Laftan Anlamaz alongside Hande Erçel. It was the moment his name began to make real waves beyond Turkey's borders. But Deniz didn't want to be stuck in the classic romantic comedy leading-man mold. So he sought out roles that demanded a denser psychological weight.

Before accepting a script, he analyzes his character's ability to break down. In 2017, he joined the cast of Bizim Hikaye, where he showed he could carry the weight of a complex dramatic storyline over more than two years on air. Spanish audiences got to know him widely thanks to this title.

The risks of streaming and maturity

In 2021, he played a former soldier in Maraşlı. It was a risky bet on the story's dark tone. The shoot demanded grueling physical preparation (combat training and weapons handling) to completely break away from his previous image. And the gamble paid off.

But the real breakthrough into the international scene came with digital platforms. In 2023, he starred in Şahmaran for Netflix. The series blended mythology and suspense in a format that broke away from standard free-to-air television. On that shoot, he worked alongside Serenay Sarıkaya, and the chemistry between the two carried a visually ambitious production.

The Turkish industry does not forgive mistakes.

That same year, he worked with Hande Erçel again in Bambaşka Biri. In this project, he played a journalist with multiple personality disorder. It was an enormous technical challenge because he had to switch between two opposing identities within the same scene. International critics praised his ability to shift his physical acting style without relying on special effects.

Unlike many actors of his generation, Deniz keeps a low profile in the tabloid press. He prefers to talk about his passion for photography or his bond with animals. In 2024, his participation in the blockbuster Şehrazad was confirmed. The contract includes strict confidentiality clauses and a budget that exceeds the usual standards of Ottoman-era fiction.

Filming the first outdoor scenes in Istanbul cost more than 200,000 euros per day.
