Matthew Hall finished his studies at St George's Hospital Medical School in the late eighties. He worked as a resident doctor for a while, but comedy was too strong an urge to ignore. In 1992 he won the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Festival, and his white coat was hung up for good in a closet in London.
It was a kamikaze decision.
His style didn't aim to make viewers relate but to leave them completely bewildered. He would appear on stage wearing thick-framed glasses and shirt collars that brushed his ears. That character was a mix of an old-fashioned variety show host and an aggressive surrealist, which didn't fit the molds of the traditional stand-up of the era.
That was precisely his greatest competitive advantage. But before reaching the mainstream, he had to hone his craft on alternative radio and TV circuits, where audiences didn't always get his jokes about stuffed animals or imaginary fights.
In 2001 he began the phase that defined his career with Harry Hill's TV Burp. The show dissected the week's British television with frantic editing and absurd visual sketches. What seemed like a niche show ended up dominating prime time for eleven years in a row.
He got millions of people to watch puppet fights on national television.
And he did it without ever lowering the level of strangeness in his scripts. The show won several BAFTA Awards, and Hill became the official voice of You've Been Framed! starting in 2004. His knack for finding the ridiculous moment in home videos let him stay on air while other comedians of his generation disappeared.
Because his humor didn't depend on current events or passing trends. It was based on an almost clinical observation of how ridiculous human behavior can become in front of a video camera.
His move to the big screen in 2013 with The Harry Hill Movie did not get the reception critics had hoped for. The film tried to turn his universe of short sketches into a feature-length story, but the result was uneven for many fans. Despite the negative reviews, the movie grossed 3.4 million pounds at the box office during its run in theaters.
In 2019, he took on the role of host on Junior Bake Off, bringing a less stiff tone to the baking competition. His work there showed that absurd humor can work with children's audiences if the timing of the jokes is right.
He published his memoir, Matt Hall: How It Was Done, in 2022. In the book, he explains how the structure of a joke can be as precise as a complex surgical procedure.
The production of his Pedigree Chum theater tour in 2023 sold 70,000 tickets across the United Kingdom.
