Hiro Shimono is not the typical voice actor who waits around for the phone to ring. In 2001, he debuted in the series RahXephon playing Ayato Kamina, and since then his voice hasn't had a moment's rest. He wasn't chasing instant fame. He entered the industry after training at the Japan Narration Academy because he wanted to try his luck in an industry that devours talent at an astonishing pace.
For nearly a decade, his high register typecast him in youthful, somewhat clumsy roles. In 2010, he took on the role of Keima Katsuragi in The World God Only Knows, and that defined his ability to spit out dialogue at a dizzying speed. But the real change of pace came with music. In 2016, he released his first single, titled Real, to celebrate fifteen years of his professional career.
And the gamble paid off.
Many casting directors thought Shimono was only good for comic relief. They were wrong. In 2018 he began voicing Dabi in My Hero Academia and brought out a harsh tone nobody expected from him. It's a low, hate-filled register that contrasts with his public image as a cheerful man who loves fried chicken. In Japan, he's almost as famous for his love of cooking as he is for his anime roles.
The year 2019 changed his bank account and his global recognition thanks to Zenitsu Agatsuma in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Shimono had to learn to alternate hysterical crying with complete seriousness in combat scenes. The production demanded a level of energy that would have shredded the vocal cords of any newcomer. But he had already been in the business for nearly twenty years.
The industry doesn't forgive stagnation.
So his schedule filled up with projects that demanded real physical stamina behind the microphone. In 2021, he took part in The Dungeon of Black Company and continued his work on the Uta no Prince-sama franchise, playing Syo Kurusu. This latter project requires him to maintain the vocal range of a teen idol even though he is past forty. It's a matter of pure technique and diaphragm control.
In 2024, he worked on the Hashira training arc in Demon Slayer and voiced Rayne Ames in Mashle: Magic and Muscles. The agency I'm Enterprise manages his contracts under a commission structure that varies by medium, whether television or video games. His per-episode pay follows the rank system of Japan's actors' association, where he holds one of the highest tiers due to his seniority.
