Daisuke Ono didn't want to be in front of the microphone. His original plan was to work behind the cameras and in television directing during his years at Nihon University. But a casting mistake in a university audio drama forced him to voice a supporting character out of pure technical necessity. That accident permanently changed his career path.
In 2002, he began working for the Mausu Promotion agency, taking on minor and supporting roles that went nowhere. It was not a quick or easy path. For years he dubbed background characters in shows nobody remembers today while refining a baritone voice that had yet to find its place.
The seiyu industry is a meat grinder for egos.
In 2006, he got the chance to play Itsuki Koizumi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It was the exact moment his voice started to be heard across every Japanese network. But the real breakout of his career came in 2008 with Black Butler. Playing the butler Sebastian Michaelis required a mix of elegance and darkness that earned him the Best Lead Actor award at the 2010 Seiyu Awards.
Many voice actors get stuck in the young leading man archetype. Ono broke that pattern in 2014 when he took on the role of Jotaro Kujo in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. It is a rough, dry register that pushed the actor to bring his vocal cords to the brink of physical exhaustion.
Around the same time, he took on the role of Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan. The commander's speech before the final charge in the series' third season was recorded in very few takes. The intensity Ono brought to the studio was so high that the production team decided not to re-record the scene in order to preserve the natural texture of his voice.
And the gamble paid off.
Because voice acting in Japan is not just about reading lines in front of a screen. In 2016, Ono made the decision to leave the agency he had been with his whole career and go freelance. It is a risky move in such a rigid, hierarchical market, but his name already carried enough weight to stand on its own.
In 2021, he took part in the project Muv-Luv Alternative, and in 2023 he voiced Nanashi in The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse. His ability to switch between stoic heroes and refined villains lets him average fifteen projects a year across anime and video games.
Ono also manages his music career under the Lantis label. He doesn't just sing opening themes; he has supervised the arrangements of his records for more than a decade. In 2024, his schedule included collaborations on big-budget titles where his pay sits in the top bracket of the actors' agreement.
The standard contract for an actor at his level stipulates recording sessions that rarely exceed four hours per episode.
