Isabella Leong falsified her age to enter the entertainment industry. She was twelve years old when she convinced the executives at Emperor Entertainment Group that she was already a legal adolescent and could work.
And the industry forgave her.
She spent three years hidden in rehearsal rooms before the public saw her face. The company invested millions in her training because they saw in her the natural heir to Hong Kong's great pop divas. But cinema had other plans for her cool gaze and her mixed Chinese, Portuguese and English heritage.
In 2004, she released her first studio album, but sales were modest. The music market was saturated with sweet voices, and she wanted something drier. So she threw herself into shooting Isabella in 2006 under the direction of Pang Ho-cheung.
That film, set in Macau before the handover of sovereignty to China, took her straight to the Berlin International Film Festival. Her role as a young woman searching for her absent father earned her the Best Actress award at the 2006 Fantasporto festival.
Her performance broke the mold of actresses of her generation by moving away from the sappy clichés typical of commercial Asian cinema.
But success brought conflict. In 2008, Isabella Leong decided to break her contract with the agency that launched her career. The legal battle was fierce, because the company demanded compliance with an agreement that stretched across decades.
Freedom came at a high price.
She appeared in the Hollywood blockbuster The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008 alongside Brendan Fraser. The shoot was a massive technical experience that moved her definitively away from the intimate productions of her early days.
At that point, her personal life completely overshadowed her professional career.
Her relationship with the tycoon Richard Li kept her out of the spotlight for almost five years. She had three children and settled in Canada, far from the Hong Kong tabloids that scrutinized her every move.
Returning to work was not easy. In 2015, director Sylvia Chang convinced her to star in Murmur of the Hearts. It was an exercise in introspection, with Leong playing an artist dealing with family trauma and an unexpected pregnancy.
Audiences saw that her time away from the cameras had not dulled her ability to focus.
But she chose her projects very carefully. In 2020, she took part in Love After Love, directed by Ann Hui. In this period drama based on a story by Eileen Chang, she shared the bill with Eddie Peng and proved that her presence still drew audiences to prestige cinema.
She wasn't looking for quantity.
In 2023, she made a radical change of pace to shoot Bursting Point under the direction of Dante Lam. This police action film demanded grueling physical preparation to shoot combat scenes in hostile natural environments.
The production budget exceeded 25 million dollars, and the actress performed most of her stunts herself without using stunt doubles.
Filming Bursting Point in 2023 lasted several months on locations in Malaysia and Hong Kong, under temperatures that exceeded 35 degrees.
