J.A. Bayona wanted a gaze that conveyed strangeness and vulnerability in equal measure to close his trilogy. Isabella Sermon had never set foot on a professional film set before taking on a production with a budget of 170 million dollars. She entered the casting process at nine years old and emerged as the central figure of one of the most profitable franchises in film history.
Her debut in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018 was not the typical damsel-in-distress role running from prehistoric monsters. The script gave her the responsibility of playing Maisie Lockwood. But the real dramatic weight came when it was revealed that her character was the first cloned human in the franchise. That narrative twist demanded a restraint that Sermon handled with a coolness unusual for her age.
It was a trial by fire.
The British actress had to film most of her scenes interacting with nothing or with tennis balls that would later be replaced by digital effects. As a result, her powers of concentration became her best work tool. Bayona's direction drew on her facial expressiveness to connect the nostalgia of the original park with the new ethical dilemmas of genetic engineering.
After the impact of her first appearance, the young woman chose to prioritize her academic education in the United Kingdom. She did not let herself be swept along by accepting any supporting project just to stay in the spotlight. That decision set the pace of her professional growth outside the usual circuits of Hollywood child stars.
In 2022 she returned for the final chapter of the Jurassic era with Jurassic World Dominion under the direction of Colin Trevorrow. Filming took place largely during the pandemic restrictions, which forced the cast to live in a creative bubble in England. There she shared scenes with the stars of the original 1993 film, and the specialized press highlighted how her presence did not fade next to figures of the stature of Laura Dern or Jeff Goldblum.
And the industry took notice.
But film has not been her only testing ground during these years of transition into adulthood. In 2023 she took part in the fiction podcast People Who Knew Me alongside Rosamund Pike. In this audio project she played a teenager who uncovers lies about her mother's past after the attacks of September 11. The recording allowed her to explore much denser dramatic registers, far removed from the spectacle of major studio films.
Isabella Sermon turned 18 in 2024 while keeping a low public profile, far from the excesses of social media. Her management of fame is limited to official promotions and a very strict selection of her public appearances. The original contract for the dinosaur trilogy included confidentiality clauses that protected her privacy during nearly a decade of intermittent work.
The production of Jurassic World Dominion reached a global box office gross of 1,001 million dollars internationally.
