Jack Lowden

Jack Lowden won an Olivier Award at just 24 years old for his role in the play Ghosts. That night in 2014 in London confirmed that the blond boy born in Essex but raised in Scotland was no ordinary supporting actor. British critics immediately compared him to the great names of the national stage.

And the gamble paid off.

Before jumping into big-budget films, he shot '71 in 2014. It was a raw film about the Northern Irish conflict in which Lowden had barely any dialogue, yet his physical presence was suffocating. Christopher Nolan noticed his ability to convey tension and recruited him for Dunkirk in 2017.

He spent much of the shoot inside the cockpit of a Spitfire fighter plane.

You could barely see his face beneath the oxygen mask, but he carried the dramatic tension of the aerial storyline almost single-handedly. Then came 2018, when he stepped into the skin of Lord Darnley in Mary Queen of Scots. There he met actress Saoirse Ronan, and years later the two of them founded the production company Reiver Pictures together.

Spies who don't look like spies

In 2022, he premiered Slow Horses playing River Cartwright. He's an MI5 agent sent to a dead-end office after a catastrophic mistake during a training exercise. The series works because Lowden portrays failure with a mix of arrogance and desperation that feels very human.

But his big acting challenge came with Benediction in 2021.

Under the direction of Terence Davies, he played the poet Siegfried Sassoon. It was a work of delicate emotional craftsmanship that earned him a Scottish BAFTA nomination for his portrayal of a man broken by World War I. Lowden tends to gravitate toward characters who carry invisible guilt.

In 2024, he produced and starred in The Outrun. The film was shot in the Orkney Islands and was the first major project under his own production company. They wanted stories that captured the harshness of the Scottish landscape without falling into postcard clichés for tourists.

Total control of the image

He married Saoirse Ronan in a private ceremony in Edinburgh during the summer of 2024. There were no social media photos or exclusive million-dollar deals, since the actor has always kept a careful distance from the media noise of London.

And the control is absolute.

In 2025, production of the fifth season of Slow Horses set a record-breaking budget for the streaming service that carries it.
