Jacqueline Byers was born in Toronto and did not chase fame desperately. She studied at Queen's University before stepping onto a professional set. In 2014 she landed her first major role in the series Ascension. It was a modest start, but enough for casting directors to take notice of her profile.
And her luck changed fast.
She played Natalie in Roadies during 2016. Cameron Crowe chose her for this Showtime production centered on the world of rock tours. There she learned that television demands an exhausting physical pace, since the workdays exceeded twelve hours of real work.
In 2017, the project that brought her international recognition arrived. Salvation cast her as Grace Barrows. The sci-fi series ran for two seasons and ended in 2018 after 26 episodes filmed entirely in Toronto. Before shooting each scene, Byers reviewed the script with almost academic rigor.
Byers broke an unwritten rule of horror cinema in 2022. She was the first woman to play an exorcist in a major studio production. In Prey for the Devil, she played Sister Ann, and critics were harsh on the plot, but she carried the film with a dry, restrained presence.
She shot the film in Bulgaria under the direction of Daniel Stamm. Filming was complex because of the emotional weight of the possession scenes. But Byers chose not to use stunt doubles for much of the physical sequences, in order to add realism.
There was no turning back.
That work in the horror genre showed she could lead a global marquee. The film's budget was around $14 million, and it managed to triple that figure at the international box office.
In 2023, she joined the cast of The Big Door Prize to play Cass. The Apple TV+ series explores destiny through a strange machine that appears in a small town. It's a distinctive role where humor coexists with a very specific melancholy.
But Byers doesn't limit herself to acting in front of the camera.
She is interested in producing and developing stories from the ground up. In 2017, she took part in Ordinary Days, a Canadian drama shot on a minimal budget of 60,000 dollars. That independent film experience taught her to value limited resources on set.
Production on the second season of The Big Door Prize wrapped filming in Georgia in mid-2023. Byers's contract with the platform included temporary exclusivity clauses to ensure her presence at future promotions. The series is executive produced by David West Read.
