James Gammon had a voice that sounded like crushed gravel and chewing tobacco. He wasn't the kind of actor who sought the spotlight, yet he ended up owning it through sheer physical presence.
He was born in Illinois in 1940.
His career was no bed of roses. He worked as a television technician before someone realized that his weathered face worked better in front of the camera than behind the cables. In 1966 he made his debut in the series The Wild Wild West, starting a career as a supporting actor that carried the industry for decades.
Despite his image as a rough-hewn Midwesterner, Gammon was a cornerstone of experimental theater in Los Angeles. He founded the Met Theatre. There he became Sam Shepard's favorite performer, because no one understood that broken, dusty masculinity of American theater better than he did.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1996, he earned a Tony nomination for his role in Buried Child. That stage production made it clear that behind the growls of his action-hero characters was a method actor capable of holding the most uncomfortable silence in the audience. He won the respect of Broadway without losing the down-to-earth essence of a man from the countryside.
The general public mainly knows him from Major League in 1989. His portrayal of Lou Brown is a masterclass in how to be a cynical yet lovable leader. That film grossed 50 million dollars in the United States alone and cemented him in the public imagination as the eternal coach or the sheriff who has seen it all.
But his filmography is vast.
He appeared in Silverado in 1985 and later in Revenge in 1990 alongside Kevin Costner. Gammon didn't need many lines of dialogue to command respect. He just had to narrow his eyes. In 2003 he appeared in Cold Mountain, bringing the gravitas needed for a period drama aiming for gritty realism.
His work rate didn't slow down over the years. Between 1996 and 2001 he played Nick Cassidy in the series Nash Bridges. He appeared in 111 episodes. That steady paycheck didn't stop him from pursuing independent projects or small roles in auteur films, where his presence lent credibility to any mediocre script.
He died in July 2010 at his home in Costa Mesa, California.
He suffered from adrenal gland and liver cancer, which worsened in his final months. His last on-screen appearance was in the film The New Daughter, released in 2009, where he shared the cast with Kevin Costner one last time. He died at age 70, leaving three projects in post-production that were released posthumously.
