It came from outer space!

It's 1957, in the middle of the Cold War. In the small coastal town of Rockwell, Maine, an object from space has crashed into the ocean. Hogarth Hughes, an imaginative boy, investigates a series of blackouts occurring in the area. Venturing into the forest, he discovers a gigantic robot devouring the power lines of an electrical substation. Hogarth is frozen with fear in the presence of that metal creature. Meanwhile, the US Army and an FBI agent named Kent Mansley scour the area, convinced that the giant poses a threat. The film is directed by Brad Bird, and the lead voices are provided by Eli Marienthal, Christopher McDonald, and Jennifer Aniston.

Trivia about The Iron Giant

The giant was made up of 7,000 pieces, compared with the 10,000 of the Battle Giant, and its design was handled by Joe Johnston.
According to a report from the time, the film cost $50 million, although Box Office Mojo later listed a budget of $70 million.
Michael Kamen's score was recorded over one week at the Rudolfinum in Prague, without the usual methods of syncing the music to the picture.
According to Bird, the studio produced only one poster for the film, even though the marketing campaign was one of the reasons for its box office failure.

Quotes by The Iron Giant

  • I believe you. What if it is Sputnik, or a flying saucer from Mars? I bet we could find it.
  • Would you say grace, please?
  • Sorry, kid. I didn't really see anything. But if we don't stick up for the kooks, who will?
  • [sternly] Step outside, Mansley.
  • Wig out, it means crazy. You know like, uh- [makes a crazy face and babbles; Giant mimics him] No, no! Don't do that! That's the kind of stuff that makes them shoot at you.
  • [still talking with Dean] Hmm, I see why Hogarth sneaks out here.
