Christopher McDonald has a face built for antagonism. It's not a criticism. It's an asset he has been cashing in on since the late seventies, playing guys you dislike at first sight.
In 1991, he played Darryl in Thelma & Louise and set the standard for the insufferable husband. That role gave him the keys to a Hollywood office he has yet to leave.
And it paid off.
But his career didn't start in the big studios. Before arriving in Los Angeles, he honed his craft in New York theater and took part in smaller productions, where he learned to use his height and deep voice to dominate the stage.
His career took off in 1996 with Happy Gilmore. His performance as Shooter McGavin is a study in competitive arrogance. Interestingly, McDonald nearly turned down the role because he was tired of playing villains.
He changed his mind after meeting Adam Sandler and realizing that parody was the way to go. The result was a character that still sparks comments at professional golf tournaments today.
That same year, he also worked on The Rich Man's Wife. His ability to jump from physical comedy to psychological thriller without missing a beat is what keeps him working nonstop.
He has never stopped working.
In 2000, he appeared in Requiem for a Dream in a brief but suffocating role. He played Tappy Tibbons (that TV host who sells empty dreams through the screen). It was a different register that confirmed his presence filled the frame even without jokes.
He appeared in shows such as Family Law between 1999 and 2002. His natural habitat has always been studio films, where supporting actors carry the plot while the stars soak up the flashbulbs.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Hacks to play Marty Ghilain. His chemistry with Jean Smart at the Las Vegas card tables earned him an Emmy nomination. It's a role that revives his mature leading-man essence with a touch of cynicism.
In 2023, he shot Secret Invasion for Marvel, playing Chris Stearns. It was a logical move for an actor who has worked on nearly every major franchise in American industry.
The pace doesn't let up.
In 2024, he added to his credits with the comedy Unfrosted, directed by Jerry Seinfeld. Despite changes in moviegoing habits, his name appears in the credits of more than two hundred different projects.
His contract for the third season of Hacks included an absolute availability clause for location shoots in the state of Nevada.
