Jennifer Joanna Aniston was born in Los Angeles because the family business left no other option. The daughter of actors, she grew up watching her father, John Aniston, make a living in endless soap operas while she tried to find her place in New York. She studied at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, but her first jobs had nothing to do with the spotlight.
Before landing professional scripts, she worked as a bike messenger and a telemarketer. The industry didn't seem to have a place for her in the early nineties. She appeared in shows that few remember, such as Molloy in 1990 and Ferris Bueller the same year. Both were canceled quickly. The sense of failure was constant during that period.
No one in her family believed acting would be a stable career.
In 1993, she shot Leprechaun, a low-budget horror film that is now seen as a curiosity but at the time nearly pushed her to quit acting. The reviews were brutal. Aniston seriously considered walking away just before the project came along that would change everything.
In 1994, she auditioned for a series originally titled Friends Like Us. The producers wanted her to read for the role of Monica Geller, but she insisted she was a better fit for Rachel Green. It was an instinctive decision. The series premiered in September 1994, and audience response was immediate.
Her character's impact went beyond the storyline. Her hairstyle in the early seasons sparked a global trend that she, ironically, hated because it was so hard to maintain. But the real action was happening in the boardrooms. In 2002, she and her five castmates negotiated a contract for one million dollars per episode for the final seasons.
And the gamble paid off.
During the ten years the series ran, Aniston worked to keep her film career alive. In 2002, she starred in The Good Girl to show she could move beyond the lightweight sitcom roles of television. Critics at the Sundance Film Festival praised her performance as a depressed supermarket cashier. It was her first serious attempt to break free of the girl-next-door image.
But audiences preferred seeing her in commercial romantic comedies. Titles like Bruce Almighty in 2003 and The Break-Up in 2006 performed very well at the box office. They were safe bets. In 2008, she founded her own production company, Echo Films, to have full control over the stories she wanted to tell and to stop waiting for calls that never came.
In 2014, she sought academic recognition once again with Cake. She played a woman living with chronic pain and appeared on screen without makeup and with prosthetic scars. Although she didn't receive an Oscar nomination, the industry recognized that her gift for drama was real. So she decided that her next step wasn't on the big screen but on streaming platforms.
Money changed the rules of the game in the industry.
In 2019, Aniston returned to television with The Morning Show for Apple TV+. She starred in the series and also served as an executive producer, earning two million dollars per episode. The show tackles the MeToo movement and power dynamics in the media. In 2020, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for this role.
In 2023, she premiered the sequel Murder Mystery 2 on Netflix alongside Adam Sandler. The film drew 64 million viewing hours in its first few days. It shows her commercial drawing power decades after her debut. Aniston has managed her public image well, keeping the tabloids from taking over her career.
In 2024, production of the fourth season of The Morning Show set operating costs at levels that exceed the budgets of many A-list feature films. The actress maintains her residence in Bel Air and oversees the final cut of every project through Echo Films. International distribution deals for her former series still generate 20 million dollars a year in image rights.
