John Mayer left the prestigious Berklee College of Music at nineteen because he felt theory was getting in his way. He moved to Atlanta in 1997 with a backpack and an acoustic guitar to play small venues where nobody paid him any attention. He recorded the EP Inside Wants Out independently and began promoting it on local radio stations.
It was a risky bet on a kid who didn't want to be a session musician.
In 2001 he released Room for Squares, and the impact on the sales charts was immediate. He won a Grammy in 2003 for Your Body Is a Wonderland, which earned him the label of a teen pop product. But Mayer had other plans for his career that did not involve being a pretty face of pop for long.
Mayer decided he would rather sound like Eric Clapton than like an MTV star. He formed the John Mayer Trio in 2005 with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan to explore a raw, electric sound. The live album Try! proved his six-string technique was on par with the great masters of the genre.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite doubts from his record label, audiences embraced his shift toward blues rock with Continuum in 2006. The album includes Gravity and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, which are key pieces of his current repertoire. He made the electric guitar a star again on radio dominated by synthesizers.
After several years of tabloid scandals and ill-advised statements in 2010, he decided to step away from everything. He moved to a ranch in Montana to recover his health and anonymity. He underwent complex surgery for a vocal cord granuloma that forced him to stay completely silent for months.
There he wrote Born and Raised in 2012, with a style close to the folk of the 1970s.
Critics ate their words.
That album sold 219,000 copies in its first week and helped clean up his public image. But his biggest challenge came in 2015 when he joined the surviving members of Grateful Dead. They formed Dead & Company, and Mayer had to learn hundreds of complex songs to fill the void left by Jerry Garcia.
Many fans of the original band doubted his ability to improvise for hours. Mayer responded with military-level discipline and spent years perfecting his guitar tone to fit into psychedelia. Between 2015 and 2023, the band grossed more than $400 million on stadium tours.
So his status shifted from pop star to a guitarist revered as a cult figure by the old guard.
In 2021 he released Sob Rock as an aesthetic and sonic tribute to the music production of the 1980s. In 2024 he wrapped up his residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas after performing twenty-four shows with cutting-edge visual production. He regularly plays a PRS Silver Sky guitar that he helped design himself after two years of technical prototypes.
