From Psalms to Latex

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson grew up in a home where secular music was forbidden. Her parents were evangelical pastors in Santa Barbara, and she was only allowed to listen to gospel. She recorded a Christian music album titled Katy Hudson in 2001 that barely sold two hundred copies before the record label went under.

She moved to Los Angeles at seventeen and changed her last name to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson. She signed with and was dropped by three different record labels before finding a real break. During those uncertain years, she got by buying secondhand clothes and churning out demos nobody wanted to release.

The industry could no longer ignore her.

In 2008, she released One of the Boys under Capitol Records. The single I Kissed a Girl sparked protests among the most conservative sectors in the United States, but it topped the sales charts in twenty countries. The blend of calculated provocation and catchy hooks worked like clockwork.

The Dictatorship of the Algorithm

The year 2010 marked the start of a streak of records that only Michael Jackson had achieved until then. With the album Teenage Dream, she placed five different songs at No. 1 on the U.S. charts in a row. She sold millions of copies of hits like Firework and California Gurls, while her image was filled with colorful wigs and gummy candy dresses.

Yet music critics were always harsher on her than the mainstream audience. Behind the scenes, the situation was different. In 2012, she released the documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me, where cameras captured the collapse of her marriage to comedian Russell Brand just minutes before she went on stage in Brazil.

Nobody gives you anything in this business.

After the release of Prism in 2013, the artist decided to step away from the bubblegum pop image. In 2015, she headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, and her performance became the most-watched in the event's history up to that point. That visual spectacle with mechanical lions and felt sharks confirmed that her strength was large-scale entertainment.

She attempted a political and social change of direction with the album Witness in 2017. The public response was cold, and sales plummeted compared to her previous work. So she turned to television and signed a deal as a judge on American Idol in 2018, reportedly earning 25 million dollars per season.

A Strategic Retreat

She held her spot on television for seven consecutive seasons until her final exit in May 2024. During those years, she prioritized her family life and her Las Vegas concert residency titled Play. The show ran at the Resorts World Theatre between 2021 and 2023, with a total of fifty-four completed performances.

Pop is a game of precise timing.

In September 2024, she released her sixth studio album under the title 143. The project got off to a rocky start after the controversial decision to work again with producer Dr. Luke on the single Woman's World. The music press called the album a failed attempt to revive a sound that no longer fit the trends of the decade.

Despite the ups and downs on the charts, her financial standing remained rock solid. In September 2023, she sold the rights to her music catalog to the company Litmus Music for close to 225 million dollars. The deal included the five albums she recorded with Capitol Records between 2008 and 2020.
