Neil Patrick Harris was born in Albuquerque in 1973, surrounded by court records. His parents were lawyers who ran a restaurant, but their son preferred theater camps in the mountains of New Mexico. At fifteen, he was already sharing a set with Whoopi Goldberg in Clara's Heart. It was a dry, direct entry into the industry that earned him his first Golden Globe nomination before he was old enough to drive.
In 1989, he put on the white coat of Doogie Howser, M.D., and American television found its ideal boy genius. The series ran for four seasons. Harris played a teenage genius who practiced medicine while dealing with acne. That role brought him massive global fame that nearly consumed him when the show ended in 1993.
The industry wrote him off before he turned thirty.
For a decade, the actor kept a low profile, working in theater and in supporting roles that barely made a splash. He lent his voice to animated series and took on work in low-budget TV movies. But in 2004, he played a drugged-out, unhinged version of himself in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. That parody of his own public image opened the door to a new phase of his career built on self-parody and risk.
And then came the suit.
In 2005, the casting team for How I Met Your Mother was looking for a tough, burly actor for the role of Barney Stinson. Harris auditioned and decided the character should be an obsessive magician who loved expensive suits. His performance was so overwhelming that the writers rewrote the series to give him more weight. Harris was paid 400,000 dollars per episode toward the end of the show's nine seasons.
In 2006, the actor publicly came out as gay in a statement to People magazine. He did so with a naturalness that defused any attempt at sensationalist scandal in the press of the time. That decision did not slow his career. Quite the opposite. His ability to play Hollywood's most exaggerated heterosexual womanizer on television while serving as a role model for the LGBTQ+ community broke several glass ceilings in Hollywood.
But television success wasn't enough for him. Harris wanted to return to the Broadway stage with projects that demanded real physical effort. In 2014, he took the lead role in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He played a transgender rock singer from East Germany. For this work, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor and proved his range went far beyond the canned laughter of a sitcom.
The gamble paid off.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences entrusted him with hosting the Oscars ceremony in 2015. Harris had already hosted the Tonys and the Emmys several times, with excellent ratings. His style relied on complex musical numbers and a frantic pace reminiscent of the classic TV hosts of the 1950s. However, critics were harsh about his work at the Oscars, and the actor decided to step back from major award shows for a while.
In 2017, he signed with Netflix to play Count Olaf in A Series of Unfortunate Events. It was a three-season project in which production design and makeup allowed him to hide behind dozens of disguises. The series adapted all thirteen books by Daniel Handler and allowed Harris to also serve as an executive producer to control the visual tone of the show.
In 2021, he appeared in the British miniseries It's a Sin, playing a tailor in 1980s London. It was a brief, restrained role that earned praise for its dramatic restraint. A year later, he starred in Uncoupled for Netflix (a comedy about a single man at fifty), but the platform decided not to renew it after the first batch of episodes.
In 2023, he played the villain known as The Toymaker in the sixtieth anniversary special of Doctor Who. Filming took place in Cardiff, and Harris had to learn complex choreography for a musical showdown with David Tennant. In 2024, the series Uncoupled was canceled for good after its short, unsuccessful run on Showtime. His estimated net worth exceeds 50 million dollars.
