In the summer of 2005, Warner Bros. plastered billboards across half the world with cutoffs cut right up to the edge of decency. Jessica Simpson made her big-screen debut in the role of Daisy Duke in the film adaptation of The Dukes of Hazzard, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar. The studio wasn't looking for Meryl Streep. It wanted to crush the summer box office by relying on the most-televised blonde of the early two thousands.
Nobody expected a method actress.
That film grossed more than $111 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million. Her version of These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ played on the radio around the clock, and Hollywood saw in her a seemingly endless gold mine for light comedy.
To understand her move into film, you have to go back to 2003, when MTV premiered Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The reality show documented her marriage to Nick Lachey with a raw honesty that cable TV had only just discovered. That famous mix-up between canned tuna and chicken sent her popularity through the roof.
But the jump from the family living room to professional film sets came with a catch. Simpson carried a public image so fixed in viewers' minds that any fictional character was swallowed by her own media caricature before the opening credits had even ended.
In 2006, she starred in Employee of the Month alongside Dane Cook and Dax Shepard. Critics tore the film apart without mercy, but it earned 38 million dollars at the box office on a production budget of just 12 million. And the business was still holding up.
The winning streak ended when she shot Blonde Ambition in 2007. The production cost more than ten million dollars, and at its technical screening in Texas theaters it took in just 1,250 dollars across eight theaters during its opening weekend. That flop forced the distributor to send the film straight to the DVD market.
Audiences in theaters no longer bought the character.
The following year she tried to reinvent herself with Major Movie Star, later retitled Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous. The film, conceived as a military spoof in the style of Private Benjamin, didn't even get a commercial release in American theaters. That's how the doors of the major Los Angeles studios closed for good.
Outside the usual casting circuit, Simpson used the remnants of her media buzz to build a business empire far removed from Hollywood. By 2005, she had teamed up with businessman Vince Camuto to launch a line of footwear and accessories.
The move defied every industry calculation.
By 2014, her brand was bringing in billions of dollars a year in U.S. department stores. She no longer had to face a casting director's judgment or the scrutiny of executive producers to maintain an empire of her own.
In 2020, she published her memoir under the title Open Book, in which she recounted the humiliations she suffered on set due to body weight demands. That manuscript allowed her to negotiate a deal with Amazon Studios in 2021 to develop fiction and documentary projects based on her writing.
In October of 2021, she paid 65 million dollars to buy back full control of her brand, keeping 100% of the company without relying on outside investment funds.

Things you probably didn't know about Jessica Simpson
Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish? I know it's tuna, but it… it says "Chicken... by the Sea".
A little bit is not that much to ask to ay things right.
The real me is a southern girl with her Levis on and an open heart. Wish I could save the world, like I was super girl.
