The Kid Who Could Have Been Michael J. Fox

Charlie Schlatter didn't need decades of training in dive theaters to break into the industry in a big way. In 1988, he made his big-screen debut alongside Michael J. Fox in Bright Lights, Big City, and that same year he starred in 18 Again! opposite the legendary George Burns. He had the perfect face for the teen movies of the late eighties. He was small, electric, and had a natural charm that Los Angeles producers tried to cash in on right away.

That early stage was a whirlwind of opportunities that ended in a poisoned chalice. In 1990, he accepted the role of Ferris Bueller in the television version of John Hughes's film. Replacing Matthew Broderick in the public imagination was a mission impossible. The series barely lasted one season, and critics were merciless toward a show that failed to capture the magic of the original material.

And the gamble didn't pay off so well.

After the setback with the series, Schlatter had to redirect his ambitions in a Hollywood that was already looking for new faces for the 1990s. He did not sink into the oblivion of child stars. But he quickly understood that his future was not on movie theater posters, but in the steady work of the small screen.

From the Hospital to the Recording Booth

Early in 1995, his career found a solid anchor when he joined the cast of Diagnosis Murder. For six seasons he played Dr. Jesse Travis, sharing scenes with Dick Van Dyke. The chemistry between the two became the engine of the series and made him a familiar face to millions of viewers around the world. That job gave him the financial stability he needed to explore less visible territory.

Television was his lifeline.

While solving fictional crimes on the hospital drama, Schlatter began to tap into a talent that would become his true gold mine. His voice had an astonishing elasticity. By 1991 he had already brought Flash to life in the Superman animated series, and that was only the beginning of an endless list of credits in animation and video games.

From the early two thousands on, the actor became one of the most respected names in American voice-over work. He voiced characters in Ben 10, The Loud House and Justice League Action. In video games, his work on franchises such as Skylanders and Lego Dimensions kept him busy without relying on his physical image.

The reality behind the microphone

In 2006, Schlatter's life was hit by a blow outside the script when he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. It was a quiet ordeal that the actor chose not to make public right away, so it wouldn't affect his work contracts. He kept up a frantic work pace while following a strict treatment regimen that let him live with the illness for more than a decade without leaving the recording studio.

Voice acting became his refuge.

Because in the sound booth, fatigue or the side effects of medication didn't matter. There he was still the young hero or the over-the-top villain that casting directors were looking for. In 2021, he took part in the voice cast of The Casagrandes and stayed connected to the Scooby-Doo franchise, providing additional voices for various direct-to-video productions.

His marriage to Colleen Gunderson since 1994 has been one of the pillars supporting a career of more than thirty years in an environment as volatile as California. Schlatter currently lives in Los Angeles and manages his image rights through his own professional structure. In 2022, the actor had an estimated net worth of $1.5 million, derived mainly from his residual income from television syndication.
