Jason Biggs agreed to eat an apple pie on camera in 1999, and that gesture defined his career. He was barely 21 years old when American Pie blew up the global box office with 235 million dollars in ticket sales. But before that teen explosion, the actor was already a veteran of New Jersey sets.
He was doing commercials by the age of five. In 1991 he landed his first major role on the series Drexell's Class, and soon after he joined the daytime drama As the World Turns. That job earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination before he came of age.
Massive success is often a silk trap.
Hollywood decided that Biggs was the official face of the teen sex comedy. He reprised the role of Jim Levenstein in 2001 and 2003 because the paychecks were too big to say no. And although he tried to diversify his range with Loser in 2000, audiences still saw him as the awkward boy from the suburbs.
In 2002 he decided to try his luck on the Broadway stage. He played Benjamin Braddock in an adaptation of The Graduate opposite Kathleen Turner. New York critics accepted his performance, but Hollywood kept typecasting him as a troubled young Jewish man.
Woody Allen gave him a golden opportunity in 2003 with Anything Else. The director even said Biggs was better at playing Woody Allen than Woody Allen himself. It was an important intellectual boost for an actor who had been making broad comedies.
The movie was not the commercial success that had been expected.
After a few years of small projects and animated voice work, the actor found a new home on digital platforms. In 2013 he joined the cast of Orange Is the New Black as Larry Bloom. The role allowed him to move away from physical comedy and show a much more cynical and vulnerable side.
He appeared in 28 episodes of the Netflix series before leaving in 2015. That project restored the visibility he needed to choose work with greater creative freedom. In 2016 he starred in the play The Heidi Chronicles, proving his theater training was still sharp.
And then he went back to his roots.
In 2012 he agreed to make American Reunion to close out the franchise that made him a millionaire. The film did well in international markets and proved that nostalgia is a very profitable product. But Biggs was no longer looking to lead big studio blockbusters.
In 2020 he headlined the series Outmatched for Fox. The show lasted only one season on air before being canceled due to low ratings. So the actor went back to focusing on independent projects and collaborations in digital media.
During 2023 he worked on the Christmas movie Best. Christmas. Ever! under the direction of Mary Lambert. Filming took place at various locations in Utah with a small crew. In 2024 his participation in the action film Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die, shot in South Africa, was announced.
The production of this latest film had an estimated budget of 15 million dollars.
