The Cookie Girl and the Vampire Cult

Alyson Hannigan sold Oreo cookies in TV commercials before she turned ten. She wasn't the typical child prodigy with an intense stare, but she had an innate ability to seem familiar on camera. In 1988, she made her film debut in My Stepmother Is an Alien, sharing the screen with Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger.

That first foray onto the big screen didn't catapult her to instant stardom. She spent almost a decade in supporting roles and one-off episodes of series nobody remembers. But in 1997, her luck changed dramatically when she joined the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Willow Rosenberg started out as the brilliant, shy friend of the lead character. As the seasons went on, the character evolved into one of the most powerful witches in television fiction. That transformation included one of the first lasting lesbian romances on American television. Audiences connected with her vulnerability and her brutal honesty.

And the gamble paid off.

Over the seven years that the Joss Whedon series ran, the actress learned to handle the rhythms of fantasy and teen drama. Before production wrapped, she had already moved into mainstream film with a franchise that would define the raunchy comedy of the late nineties.

The music camp and the success of the 2000

In 1999, she played Michelle Flaherty in American Pie. It was a calculated risk that paid off. The film cost $11 million to make and ended up grossing more than $235 million worldwide. Her line about what happened once at the music camp became etched in the collective memory of a generation.

She reprised the role in three more sequels, including American Reunion in 2012. But her biggest financial and popularity success would come again through television. In 2005, she took the role of Lily Aldrin in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Lily was the emotional glue of the group of friends in New York. Over nine seasons, Hannigan maintained a difficult balance between physical comedy and domestic drama about motherhood and frustrated artistic ambitions. In 2014, the series came to an end after 208 episodes and a syndication deal that gave her lifelong financial independence.

But the pace of weekly shoots left her exhausted.

After the MacLaren's bar closed, she looked for projects that would allow a real work-life balance with her family in Los Angeles. In 2016, she took on the challenge of hosting the magic competition Penn & Teller: Fool Us. She fronted the show for seven seasons, bringing a touch of clean humor to card tricks and disappearing acts.

Dancing and mature projects

In 2021, she returned to family films with the Disney movie Flora and Ulysses, playing a romance novelist in the middle of a creative crisis. The production premiered directly on digital platforms without a theatrical release. So she looked for new challenges outside pure scripted fiction.

She competed in season 32 of Dancing with the Stars in 2023. No one in the entertainment press expected her to do well because she had no prior professional dance training. She finished in fourth place in the finals after losing several pounds from intensive training and receiving massive support from the older audience that had followed her since the nineties.

Sometimes recognition comes from physical effort rather than from the script.

Her net worth is estimated at over $40 million, thanks to real estate investments and the residual income from her hit series. She lives with her husband, actor Alexis Denisof, whom she met on the set of Buffy more than two decades ago. Her home in Encino served as the main location for the filming of the drama This Is Us for several years.
