Javier Botet didn't choose his physique, but he decided how to move it. Born in Ciudad Real in 1977, he was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome at age five. This genetic condition gave him a two-meter (about six-foot-six) frame, extremely long limbs, and hypermobility that defies visual logic.
Many would have seen a limitation in those thin fingers and flexible joints. He saw an opportunity for transformation. As a child, horror films were a refuge, and later they became his office.
The industry discovered him almost by accident in a special effects workshop.
In 2007, the release of REC radically changed his career. Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza needed something that didn't look human for the film's climax. Botet stepped into the skin of Niña Medeiros and shot that final sequence without digital tricks.
The way he crawled across the floor of that Barcelona attic made an immediate impact on the genre.
A movement test video for the film Mama went viral in Los Angeles studio offices during 2013. The footage showed Botet moving like a spider in a domestic setting. Director Andy Muschietti preferred using the actor's body over computer animation because physical reality was scarier than any pixel.
From that point on, major horror productions began calling on his talents consistently.
And the directors who called him started to be top-tier. Guillermo del Toro cast him in Crimson Peak in 2015, where he played several of the ghosts that haunt the mansion. Shortly after, in 2016, he appeared in The Conjuring 2 as the Crooked Man under James Wan's direction.
But Botet's work is about more than hiding beneath layers of silicone.
In 2017 he joined the Alien: Covenant franchise under Ridley Scott. His job was to bring the Neomorph to life through motion capture techniques and physical presence on set. The actor always insists that his work demands physical preparation similar to that of an elite athlete.
Makeup sessions often last six to eight hours a day. It's an exhausting process that demands infinite patience and complete control of his breathing. In 2018 he starred in Slender Man, and in 2019 he appeared in IT Chapter Two playing a grotesque version of an infected elderly woman.
Not all of his credits are monsters.
Botet has a comedic instinct that he has explored on Spanish television in projects such as Capítulo 0. He enjoys playing with his own image and breaking the tension his darkest celebrities create. So he alternates big American productions with small auteur pieces where his face appears without masks.
In 2023 he played Dracula in The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It was a complex shoot at sea where he had to embody a far more animalistic and less romantic version of the classic vampire. Nine hours of makeup a day were needed to transform his torso into that of a winged predator.
During 2024 he took part in Late Night with the Devil, playing the entity that sets off chaos on the set. His name appears in the credits of more than one hundred international productions.
The cost of prosthetic materials for a single one of his transformations can exceed 20,000 euros.
