A talent scout named Howard Tyner noticed him while they rode up several floors in an office building. Jay Hernandez had no prior experience or industry contacts, but he accepted the acting classes Tyner offered. That chance encounter pulled a young man of Mexican descent out of his routine and put him in front of the cameras of NBC.
And the plan worked out.
His real breakthrough came with the series Hang Time in 1996. Hernandez played a student athlete for two seasons before moving into mainstream film. In 2001 he starred in Amor loco/Amor prohibido alongside Kirsten Dunst. The movie grossed 17 million dollars in its opening weekend and put him on the radar of major Hollywood studios.
But the actor wanted more than teen heartthrob roles. In 2004 he appeared in Brigada 49, and a year later he worked under Eli Roth on one of the most brutal films of the decade. Filming Hostel in 2005 was a physical challenge due to the conditions of the locations in the Czech Republic. The film was a huge financial success, grossing 82 million dollars on a minimal budget.
Hernandez's look changed completely in 2016 when he joined the DC Comics universe. He played El Diablo in Suicide Squad under thick layers of makeup and prosthetics that hid his features. The film earned more than 740 million dollars at the global box office despite mixed reviews from the specialized press.
Because commercial success doesn't always guarantee creative comfort.
In 2018 he took on the challenge of inheriting a beloved character from American television. CBS launched the reboot of Magnum P.I. with Hernandez as the lead, but without the signature mustache of the original. The actor brought a more modern approach and a veteran's edge to the role of Thomas Magnum during almost six years of continuous airing.
The series moved to NBC after an initial cancellation in 2022. During that stage Hernandez took the opportunity to step behind the camera and direct several episodes of the show. In 2024 the network aired the season five finale, closing out a run of 96 episodes in total for the California-born actor.
His career shifted toward digital platforms after his run on Hawaii ended. In 2019 he lent his voice to the character Bonnie's Dad in Toy Story 4, expanding his range into family animation. That Pixar film finished its theatrical run with more than a billion dollars grossed worldwide.
And the industry kept calling.
In 2025, he joined the cast of the second season of The Night Agent for Netflix. Filming this action production took place on locations in Thailand and New York under strict security measures. His contract for this project included an exclusivity clause for the intensive shooting months.
