Jenna Elfman didn't start out chasing applause in a top-rated sitcom. Her early training was in classical ballet, and that disciplined, sculpted discipline shows in how she commands physical space in front of the camera. In 1990, she appeared dancing in the music video for Depeche Mode's Halo. It was one of those fleeting appearances nobody remembers, yet it marked the start of a working entertainer's career.
And then the commercials came.
She filmed dozens of commercials before landing small roles in series such as Roseanne and NYPD Blue. She had no master plan to become the friendly face of American television. But in 1997 her life changed when ABC handed her the script for a comedy about an odd-couple pairing.
The premiere of Dharma & Greg in 1997 put her at the center of the North American industry. The premise played on the cultural clash between a free-spirited woman and a upper-class lawyer. Elfman won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in 1999 for this role. The show ran for 119 episodes and stayed on the air for five seasons until it was canceled in 2002.
During those years she tried to break into film with mid-budget projects. In 2000 she starred in Keeping the Faith alongside Ben Stiller and Edward Norton. The movie grossed $ 59 million at the U.S. box office. It was her most serious attempt to become a movie star before the industry changed its priorities.
Television is a cruel business.
After the end of her big hit, she tried to repeat the formula with Courting Alex in 2006. The series did not make it past its first season due to low ratings. Three years later she headlined Accidentally on Purpose for CBS, and the result was the same after airing only 18 episodes. Programmers started to see in her a trace of an era that was no longer coming back.
In 2012, she appeared in 1600 Penn, a comedy set in the White House that also failed to make it past thirteen episodes. Her acting style seemed stuck in the 1990s. But in 2018 she made a decision that changed her public image when she joined the cast of Fear the Walking Dead.
She played June Dorie in a zombie apocalypse setting, a world far removed from canned laughter. She appeared in 64 episodes of the AMC drama until the series officially ended in 2023. This stage helped her shed her image as an actress typecast in quirky, upbeat characters.
The market is not the same anymore.
In 1995 she married actor Bodhi Elfman, and the couple has been part of the Church of Scientology for decades. In 2020 they launched a joint podcast called Kicking and Screaming, where they discuss their years of married life. Elfman lives in Los Angeles and runs her own production company under the name Syzygy Productions.
