Jess Gabor did not take the easy route of mass auditions at shopping malls. Instead, they traveled to Russia to train at the Moscow Art Theatre, because they understood that acting required an almost military-level physical foundation. There they learned that silence on stage communicates far more than a shouted monologue.
That time abroad shaped her return to Los Angeles. She finished her studies at Loyola Marymount University with a mindset different from that of her classmates. And that difference showed in her first camera auditions.
It was a matter of pure technique.
In 2014, she appeared in the short film Last Stop. It was a minor job, but it helped casting directors start noting her name for independent projects. Gabor avoided naive-girl roles and looked for characters with an inner weight that is hard to handle.
Her real breakout came in 2018 with the ninth season of Shameless. She joined the series to play Kelly Keefe, and her presence shook up the Gallagher family's dynamic for a considerable time. The character demanded a mix of military toughness and sensitivity, which Gabor delivered without relying on the usual tricks of television drama.
Her success in a long-running series did not stop her from seeking darker projects. In 2019, she starred in Confessional under the direction of Brad T. Gottfred. The film was shot in a confined space, and the entire narrative weight rested on the actors' faces.
The camera doesn't lie when you're thirty centimeters away.
That experience helped her realize that genre films could be a serious vehicle for her career. So in 2020, she joined the cast of Run Sweetheart Run. The Blumhouse production premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and offered a survival thriller that worked as a direct critique of male power dynamics.
Gabor decided she didn't want to depend solely on other people's decisions to find work. By 2017, she had already written and produced the short film The Seven Year Itch because she felt that female voices were missing when it came to talking about frustration from an honest place. But her interest in producing was no whim of a famous actress.
She got involved in the financing and editing processes of her own projects. This behind-the-camera work helped her choose her big-screen roles more carefully. In 2023, she joined the cast of The Machine alongside Mark Hamill and Bert Kreischer.
And the change of direction was total.
Moving from intense drama to an action comedy with a budget of $20 million presented a different logistical challenge. The film was shot mainly in Serbia during 2021, though its commercial release was delayed until May 2023. Filming in the Balkans required night shoots in weather conditions that reminded her of her training years in Russia.
The film The Machine earned just over $10 million at the American box office during its first month in theaters.
