Joey Diaz entered Fortune Prison in 1988 on charges of kidnapping and aggravated robbery. There, he discovered that comedy wasn't an aesthetic choice but a survival tool among the other inmates. That stint in a Colorado prison laid the first stone of a career built from the ground up.
And the gamble paid off.
His arrival in Los Angeles in the mid-nineties came with no red carpet. He worked every dive club in the city, sleeping in cars or on couches lent by other comics. But his style was too raw for mainstream TV at the time.
In 2004, he landed a small role in Spider-Man 2. It wasn't the start of a star-making career, but it got him into the actors' union. Diaz has always seen film as blue-collar work rather than an exercise in vanity.
His big break in mainstream movies came in 2005 with The Longest Yard. He shared the set with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock in a production that grossed more than $190 million worldwide. That paycheck gave him the financial breathing room he needed to leave behind the criminal lifestyle of his youth for good.
But his real media breakthrough happened outside traditional film sets. In 2012, he launched his own podcast, The Church of What's Happening Now. Through that microphone, he built a global audience that connected with his stories of excess and redemption in New Jersey.
So he became a cult figure without ever passing through the filters of the major Hollywood studios.
David Chase drew on his look and his past for the most personal project of his career. In 2021, Diaz played Lio "Buddha" Mancini in The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to The Sopranos. His performance was restrained and free of unnecessary flourishes.
He didn't need many takes to win over the directing team.
Despite the media noise, he always kept a certain distance from the entertainment industry. In 2020, he decided to leave California and return to New Jersey. He wanted his daughter to grow up in an environment similar to the one he knew in his childhood.
In 2023, he published his memoir under the title Tremendous: The Life of a Comedy Savage. The book reached the top spots on the nonfiction bestseller lists of that period. The publishing deal topped six figures thanks to the huge following of his online community on social media.
His appearance on Netflix's The Degenerates in 2018 remains one of the most-watched comedy titles on the platform. Filming for his segment was completed in just two recording nights in Las Vegas.
