The knee that made an actor

Dean Cain had a contract offer from the Buffalo Bills on the table when his right knee decided there would be no NFL. In 1988, a torn ACL ended his athletic career before he played a single official game. The young man of Japanese descent suddenly found himself looking for work in an industry that only valued his square jaw and his past as a Princeton athlete.

He started out filming cereal commercials and appearing in one-off episodes of teen series. But his real lucky break came in 1993 during an audition for ABC. The producers were looking for a Clark Kent who could wear jeans and still look vulnerable. His chemistry with Teri Hatcher was so obvious that the role was his before the wardrobe test was over.

He was the first Superman of the remote control generation.

For four seasons on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the actor built an image as a modern leading man. The show focused more on newsroom romance than on fights with aliens. That allowed him to avoid extreme gym routines, but it typecast him as the perfect-smile type, a label that would take him years to shake off.

The Small-Screen Maze

When the series ended in 1997, the industry turned its back on big-budget films. Cain turned to producing and hosting shows such as Ripley's Believe It or Not!, where he stayed for four years. He didn't want to be a has-been on the comic convention circuit and took roles that challenged his all-American hero image.

In 2000, he appeared in The Broken Hearts Club. Playing a gay man in an independent romantic comedy was his way of showing there was life beyond the blue tights. But box office results rule, and supporting roles in low-budget action movies became his main source of income throughout the 2000s.

And betting on quantity paid off.

He appeared in Out of Time in 2003 alongside Denzel Washington, proving he could hold his own with Hollywood's big names. But his filming pace slowed when he decided to focus on raising his son Christopher. Cain took sole custody and limited his travel so he could stay close to his family in California.

Moves and New Convictions

The actor's public profile changed dramatically starting in 2014 after his role in God's Not Dead. This faith-based film aimed at Christian audiences earned more than $60 million on a minimal budget. Cain spotted an underserved niche market and began taking on one conservative, family-friendly project after another, which guaranteed steady work without going through the major studios.

In 2018, he starred in Gosnell, a crime drama based on true events that sparked intense political debate in the United States. His conservative stance distanced him from the usual circles in Los Angeles. But Cain didn't seem to mind much, because social media and news channels gave him the visibility that movies had denied him.

He sold his Malibu home in 2023 and moved to Las Vegas.

That same year he starred in Condition of Return, directed by Tommy Stovall. In 2024, the actor focused his efforts on post-production of Little Angels, a project in which he served as screenwriter and director. The film was shot entirely on location in Nevada with a small crew and an independently financed budget.

Filming of his most recent movie in 2024 lasted exactly twenty-two days.
