Jonathan Majors is not your typical product of Los Angeles acting schools. His training at the Yale School of Drama gave him a technical polish that few actors of his generation can match. In 2017 he made his debut in the miniseries When We Rise and soon after appeared in the Western Hostiles. But his name started to genuinely catch fire in specialized circles thanks to a film from 2019.
In The Last Black Man in San Francisco he played Montgomery Allen. It was a work of emotional craftsmanship that earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards. The physical vulnerability he showed on screen became his signature. And the gamble paid off.
By 2020, Majors was already on the radar of major television productions. His leading role in the HBO series Lovecraft Country put him at the center of the cultural debate about racism in the United States. That performance earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor. But his real breakthrough into mainstream pop culture came a year later.
In 2021 he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing He Who Remains in the series Loki. His physical presence and measured tone of voice created a constant sense of threat. Because Majors understood that power doesn't always need to be shown through shouting.
In 2023 he starred in Creed III alongside Michael B. Jordan. To play the antagonist Damian Anderson, he underwent extreme military training that completely transformed his physique. Critics praised his gaze, which conveyed a mix of resentment and pain rarely found in commercial action films. Muscle control was part of his acting approach.
During that same period he shot Magazine Dreams. In this film he played an amateur bodybuilder struggling with mental stability. The movie premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and critics called it one of the most demanding performances of the decade. But his upward trajectory came to a sudden halt.
In March 2023, New York police arrested him following a domestic incident. That incident halted all of his ongoing projects and created a dead silence in the Disney offices. The industry held its breath as the legal process continued in the Manhattan courts.
The verdict was unanimous.
In December 2023, a jury found him guilty of reckless assault and harassment. Marvel Studios announced his immediate firing just hours after the judge's decision became known. The character Kang the Conqueror, who was supposed to be the centerpiece of the franchise's upcoming phases, disappeared from the studio's immediate plans. It was an unprecedented financial and image move in the history of superhero movies.
After the sentencing, Majors stayed out of the spotlight for much of 2024. His talent agency and public relations firm terminated their contracts with him long before the trial. His professional downfall at the major studios seemed like a done deal.
In June 2024, his return to film was announced with the independent movie Merciless. This supernatural thriller is directed by Martin Villeneuve and marks the actor's first attempt to rebuild his career from the industry's margins. Filming was mainly based in Europe to cut production costs and avoid American media pressure.
The production company Briarcliff Entertainment acquired the distribution rights to Magazine Dreams in September 2024, after nearly two years in limbo. The film has an estimated production budget of $12 million.
