Joseph D. Reitman arrived in Los Angeles in the early nineties with the patience of a card player. He wasn't chasing the spotlight of the big movie stars, because his real goal was to last. In 1991 he made his television debut, and since then he has never stopped working on projects of every size.
Persistence is his greatest asset.
His early years were a string of appearances in series that defined an era. He appeared in Married… with Children and Beverly Hills, 90210 in brief but effective roles. But his face began to become familiar to the general public in 2000. That year he shot The Perfect Storm alongside George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.
After the success of the disaster film, he settled into a career as a reliable supporting actor. In 2001 he worked on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back under the direction of Kevin Smith. It was a shoot that let him explore raunchy comedy before moving on to much darker projects.
Reitman has won more than $100,000 in official tournaments on the World Series of Poker circuit. Poker is far more than a weekend hobby to pass the time between shoots. That mental discipline carries directly into his more restrained performances. In 2002 he married actress Shannon Elizabeth, and together they became one of the most visible couples in the professional poker scene.
Risk is part of the script.
The couple divorced in 2005, but they maintained a cordial professional relationship in the world of gaming. Reitman understands that controlling emotions is vital both at the table and in front of the camera. That is why his characters often have a layer of mystery that viewers can't decipher at first glance.
In 2006 he worked with M. Night Shyamalan on Lady in the Water. It was an experience that helped him understand film from a more atmospheric and less narrative perspective. The actor prefers dense settings where subtext weighs more than dialogue.
In 2017 his career took a more aggressive turn with the series Happy!. Playing an infantile psychopath required complete physical control to avoid slipping into caricature. Critics praised his ability to create discomfort without resorting to screaming. Because Reitman knows that silence communicates far more on screen.
But he didn't limit himself to acting alone. He has also tried his hand at directing and producing, with projects such as Survival of the Richest. Casting directors see him as someone who understands the industry's inner workings.
You learn the craft in the mud.
In 2023 he appeared in the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, playing a television producer. His role in Amy Sherman-Palladino's series strengthened his reputation as a character actor in the New York industry. He adapts to the rhythm of fast-paced comedy just as easily as he does to sports drama.
In 2024 he joined the cast of the movie The Pitcher. The shoot took place at various locations across California on a total budget of $1.2 million. The film wrapped post-production with a final cut running 104 minutes.
