Josh Segarra was born in Orlando in 1986. He grew up in a home where Spanish and English blended as naturally as the way he learned to sing in church. Before becoming the face of DC's villains or the most sought-after comic supporting actor on American television, he spent years honing his craft in musical theater. His training at the Tisch School of the Arts gave him the tools to understand that acting is built on technical preparation, not just charisma.
In 2009, he landed the role of Hector Ruiz in the revival of The Electric Company. It was his first serious taste of being on camera. That experience in educational television taught him the pacing needed to hold a viewer's attention. But his big break on New York stages came in 2011 with the musical Lysistrata Jones, where he mixed basketball with classic comedy.
And it worked.
In 2015, he took on the role of Emilio Estefan in the Broadway musical On Your Feet!. The production demanded a level of physical energy that ended up defining his way of working in front of the spotlight. The show reached more than 700 performances, and Segarra became a recurring name for casting directors looking for performers with solid stage training.
His big break came in 2016. Segarra joined the cast of the fifth season of Arrow to play Adrian Chase. What initially seemed like a standard district attorney role turned out to be the reveal of Prometheus. He made a comic-book antagonist frightening through stillness rather than screaming. It was a restrained performance that broke with the usual conventions of superhero productions of the era.
The industry took notice right away.
What makes Segarra unusual in today's Hollywood is his ability to shift gears without making viewers feel they're watching the same actor. In 2019, he accepted the role of Lance Arroyo in the series The Other Two. His character was an upbeat young man who wore impossibly branded athleisure and represented the complete opposite of the darkness in his earlier work. Critics praised his ability to avoid easy caricature in a pure satire setting.
In 2022, he joined the Marvel universe with the series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, playing Augustus Pugliese. Filming this production required heavy use of motion-capture technology, but Segarra kept his focus on traditional physical acting. A year later, in 2023, he joined the cast of the film Scream VI, playing Danny Brackett.
In 2023, he also appeared in The Big Door Prize for Apple TV+. His character Giorgio let him explore a side of comedic self-absorption that broke away from his traditional leading-man roles. The show was shot mainly on location in Georgia under a strict ten-week schedule per season. Segarra contributed controlled improvisation that the series creators decided to keep in the final cut.
There was no turning back.
In 2024, the series The Big Door Prize wrapped up after two seasons. The production budget for these episodes exceeded 5 million dollars per episode, due to the production design and visual effects needed to recreate the fictional town of Deerfield. The series used Arri Alexa Mini cameras to capture the suburban look the script demanded.
In 2024, he worked on the series Abbott Elementary, playing Manny. His scenes were filmed at the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, following the mockumentary format that defines the show. The crew used specific lenses to preserve the realism of conventional television imagery.
