Jung Ji-so didn't want to be in front of the camera as a girl. Her obsession was jumping on ice and the precision of figure skating. In 2012 she decided that the cold of the rinks wasn't enough and traded elite sports for auditions in Seoul.
The discipline of the ice never leaves you.
She debuted that same year in the drama May Queen under her real name, Hyun Seung-min. She worked steadily for five years but always in supporting roles that never quite broke through. She needed a change of identity so the industry would see her differently.
Hyun Seung-min's name disappeared.
In 2019, she officially adopted the stage name Jung Ji-so. It was a strategic decision that coincided with the casting that turned her professional life around. The Bong Joon-ho film was already underway, and she fit the profile of the wealthy family's teenage daughter.
In Parasite, she played Da-hye. The role required a mix of innocence and quiet rebellion while she took private lessons from a fake tutor. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and four Academy Awards in 2020, catapulting her profile onto the international market overnight.
And the gamble paid off.
But massive success didn't pigeonhole her into simple roles. In 2020, she shaved her head to star in The Cursed. She played a teenager who can inflict deadly curses using only a name, a personal belonging, and a photo. It was a demanding physical process that forced analysts to take her seriously beyond the Park phenomenon.
Because Ji-so understands the weight of silence on screen. Her characters often say little but convey tension through their eyes. It's a technique she perfected during her years of sports training, where any misplaced gesture could ruin the technical score.
In 2022, she took on one of her darkest challenges in The Glory. She brought to life the younger version of the lead character during the school bullying scenes. Filming the assaults in the gym was so intense that production had to stop several times to ensure the well-being of the actors.
That performance was the engine of the entire series. If the audience didn't feel the pain of the young Dong-eun, the older version's later revenge wouldn't make sense. Jung Ji-so carried that responsibility through the first episodes of the Netflix series.
In 2023 she diversified her career by joining the music group WSG Wannabe. It was not an empty publicity move. The actress showed a vocal ability that let her top the singles charts in South Korea for several consecutive weeks.
In 2024 she recorded the TV adaptation of Miss Granny for the KBS2 network. The project was designed as a big-budget series based on the film of the same name from 2014. The production contract was closed under strict confidentiality clauses regarding the leads' final salaries.
