Karen Young never chased the fame of the neon billboards in Times Square. She started out pounding the pavement of New York in the late seventies. She looked for roles with real flesh and a lot of truth.
In 1984, she got her big break with Birdy. Alan Parker was looking for someone who didn't look like a movie star, and Young fit that almost uncomfortable restraint. She played Hannah with a containment few understood at the time. Critics focused on Nicolas Cage and Matthew Modine, but she was the emotional anchor of the story.
And that was only the beginning.
Two years later, she appeared in 9 Weeks and a Day. It was a supporting role but a necessary one for understanding the world of Kim Basinger's character. Young didn't want to be the flavor of the month, so she chose small projects on the Manhattan independent circuit.
In 1988, she filmed Torch Song Trilogy. There she proved that theater was her true school. Young has always been a stage actress who thrives on Off-Broadway when cinema becomes too noisy.
Her marriage to Tom Noonan in 1992 pulled her away from the commercial spotlight a little. They worked together on projects such as The Wife in 1995. These were raw films shot on minimal budgets. She didn't care about the money as long as the script made sense.
The mass audience got to know her thanks to television.
Between 2002 and 2006, she played FBI agent Robyn Sanseverino in The Sopranos. It was a recurring but crucial role in the storyline of the FBI's case against the DiMeo family. Young brought a bureaucratic coolness that contrasted with the emotional violence of the series. She shot ten episodes in total.
Before filming, she reads the script looking for the character's cracks. She isn't interested in perfect women. In 2005, she took part in Hacia el sur, a film that explored sex tourism in Haiti during the 1970s. It was a grueling shoot under the direction of Laurent Cantet.
She never minded aging in front of the camera.
In 2011, she worked on The Green, a drama about abuse accusations in a rural setting. The production cost less than one million dollars. Young played Janette with a restraint that recalled her early days in European art-house cinema.
But her work didn't stop with intimate dramas. During 2016, she took part in the thriller The Vigilante. Her screen presence has become more selective over time. She prefers script readings in Brooklyn basements to the red carpets of Los Angeles.
She lives in New Jersey and still teaches acting. In her classes, she insists that acting is about listening more than talking. Her filmography includes more than 40 titles across film and television. The distribution deal for her latest independent film closed for 150,000 dollars.
