Kate Hudson didn't need her mother's surname to get into Cameron Crowe's office in 1999. That year, she landed the role of Penny Lane in Almost Famous after a casting process that passed over actresses with far more experience in commercial films. She was 20 years old and had a natural energy that recalled the actresses of Hollywood's golden age.
And the gamble paid off.
Her Oscar nomination came in 2001, placing her in a privileged position that very few actresses of her generation reached so quickly. But the Los Angeles major studio system had other plans for her. Over the following decade, her name was linked almost exclusively to big-budget romantic comedies.
In 2003, she starred in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days alongside Matthew McConaughey. The movie grossed more than $177 million worldwide and set a character archetype she would struggle to shake off. The scripts that landed on her desk kept repeating the same formula of a funny, slightly clumsy woman searching for love.
She tried to break that pattern with projects far from conventional romance, such as The Skeleton Key in 2005. It was a foray into supernatural horror that performed well at the box office but did not change how critics saw her at the time. The industry preferred to see her in pastel-colored posters.
But Hudson always kept one eye on life beyond the sets.
In 2013, she founded Fabletics and turned her public image into that of a massively successful businesswoman. The activewear brand reached a valuation of one billion dollars within just a few years. This financial move allowed her to choose her acting roles with a freedom she didn't have at the start of her career.
She took supporting roles in action films such as Deepwater Horizon in 2016. She no longer sought absolute leading roles in every project, because her financial stability depended on her businesses rather than on studio contracts. In 2017, she worked under Marshall Herskovitz in a far more restrained and less commercial setting.
The release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022 brought her back to the top tier of film conversation. Directed by Rian Johnson, she played Birdie Jay and proved that her talent for sharp comedy was still intact. The three-month shoot in Greece revived her presence on home entertainment platforms.
In May 2024, she released Glorious.
It is her debut studio album and features twelve songs she wrote herself over several years of quiet work. The record charted on independent sales lists without the backing of a major traditional promotional campaign. The recording was made entirely at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles.
