Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, the film opens in San Diego in 1969. There we meet William Miller, a child prodigy who fails to fit in with his classmates. His mother, Elaine, is a widowed college professor who raises her two children with a firm hand. For her, rock and pop culture are a danger, and at home her ban is absolute. William, however, is determined to write about music from the inside and aspires to be a journalist despite his youth. His desire clashes head-on with his mother's rules, who won't tolerate a single rock song under her roof.

Where and when does this "real world" occur?

Dennis Hope: If you think Mick Jagger will still be out there trying to be a rock star at age fifty, then you are sadly, sadly mistaken.
