Kate Upton

The Dance That Broke the Server

April 2011. A YouTube video filmed at a Clippers game changes the career of a Michigan model who is 18 years old. Kate Upton dances the Dougie in front of the camera, and the view count crashes the servers of the time.

That clip wasn't an accident.

In February 2012, she made her first cover for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue after being the rookie of the previous year. That image broke with the European runway aesthetic that dominated the industry. Upton brought back the curves of 1950s actresses to a market that didn't know it had been missing them.

The industry wasn't ready.

But the commercial success was immediate. Luxury brands that had once ignored her began calling her for global campaigns. In 2013, she returned to the cover of the same magazine after a photo shoot in Antarctica with temperatures of forty degrees below zero.

Conquering the Box Office

Her first real brush with film was a brief role in Tower Heist in 2011. But the real test came in 2014 with The Other Woman. She shared the bill with Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann in a comedy that earned more than $196 million worldwide.

And the gamble paid off.

Critics were harsh about her performance at the time. But audiences didn't care, because Upton brought a commercial freshness that very few names of her generation could match. So studios started to see in her something more than a calendar face.

In 2017, she shot The Layover under the direction of William H. Macy. It was a low-budget production that ended up going unnoticed in theaters. That same year, she also married baseball pitcher Justin Verlander in a ceremony in Italy, right after he won the World Series.

Production and brand control

Starting in 2018, her professional focus moved away from the constant spotlight of high fashion. She decided to take control of her public image, because she understood that her name was a business in its own right.

She launched her own wellness and fitness platform to promote a healthy lifestyle. She didn't want to be just a face on a movie poster. In 2024, managing her personal brand and her investments in health companies took up most of her work schedule.

In 2019, she appeared in the movie Sweetness in the Belly as a nurse. Filming took place in Dublin and Ethiopia on a tight budget. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and was sold to digital platforms months later.
