Kevin Zegers started working before knowing what a professional career was. By age six he had already accumulated dozens of television commercials in Canada, and by the time he turned ten he had appeared in big-budget productions. He wasn't chasing fame, because at home the money from film shoots paid the bills.
In 1997, he starred in Air Bud and the world came to know him as the kid who played basketball with a dog. It was a massive box office hit that spawned an endless franchise. That role gave him financial security, but it also came with an implicit expiration date that almost no child actor manages to outlast.
No one expected him to survive being forgotten.
His chance to change his image came in 2005 with a small, daring film. In Transamerica he played a hustler who discovers that his father is a transgender woman in the middle of her transition. He shared the screen with Felicity Huffman, and his work earned him the Chopard Trophy at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.
And the gamble paid off. Critics discovered an actor capable of handling silences and brooding looks without relying on the usual Hollywood tricks. But professional success doesn't always guarantee personal stability in an industry that devours young talent.
Zegers began drinking compulsively during the peak of his media exposure. In 2011, he decided to enter rehab and has remained sober ever since. Sobriety was his best career move because it allowed him to regain the respect of casting directors who no longer trusted him.
By 2009, his face had become a staple of mainstream television. He played the manipulative Damian Dalgaard in Gossip Girl and later tried to conquer the teen movie market with The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in 2013. The film fell short of its box office expectations, and the planned sequels were canceled right away.
Work is simply work.
In 2018 he joined the world of Fear the Walking Dead and filmed the series Dirty John. Zegers has learned to value the security of weekly paychecks over the fleeting glory of awards. So he has specialized in supporting characters with narrative weight who don't have to carry the full burden of global promotion.
In 2022 he joined the cast of The Rookie: Feds, playing Brendon Acres (a former actor turned FBI agent). ABC canceled the series in 2023 after airing twenty-two episodes. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Jaime Feld and their two daughters, born in 2015, while he runs his own independent production company.
In 2024 his union record shows his participation in several scripted projects for streaming platforms under standard confidentiality agreements.
