When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth.

Ana Clark is a nurse in Milwaukee. After finishing her shift at the hospital, she returns home, where her husband, Louis, is waiting for her. That same night, a virus begins to spread across the world. What it spreads brings the dead back to life and makes them violent, though the couple doesn't know it yet, because the night passes without them seeing the emergency news. The next morning, Ana and Louis discover that what has happened has already reached their own street. The film, directed by Zack Snyder, follows Ana, played by Sarah Polley, as everyday order begins to fall apart.

Trivia about Dawn of the Dead

The production team looked for shopping malls slated for demolition and chose Toronto's Thornhill Square. They completely rebuilt it in eight weeks, with 14 stores and a fountain by the entrance.

The mall's stores were built as real shops, stocked with merchandise, but they carried fictional names. Only two major brands agreed to appear in the film.

Tyler Bates composed the soundtrack, but his hiring was unclear to the studio, which did not consider him an established composer. It was Snyder who insisted until he was hired.

Snyder managed to include Richard Cheese's version of "Down with the Sickness," which plays in a sequence where the characters kill time at the mall. The studio preferred the Disturbed version.

Universal released Dawn of the Dead in the United States before Shaun of the Dead. The distributor had approved the zombie comedy on that condition, to keep the two from overlapping.

Ving Rhames heard that a remake was in the works and personally contacted the producers to land a role in the film.

The film grossed 102.28 million dollars worldwide, against an estimated budget of 26 million.

The cast includes cameos by Scott Reiniger, Tom Savini and Ken Foree, who are tied to the original 1978 film.
