Synopsis of Alias Grace

Upper Canada, 1843. Grace Marks is a young Irish immigrant working as a domestic servant. She has been convicted of the murder of her employer, Thomas Kinnear, a wealthy man who hired her, and of the housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. Dr. Simon Jordan, a psychiatrist, becomes interested in her case and begins treating her. Meanwhile, Reverend Verrenger is part of a committee that wants Grace to be acquitted. Created by Sarah Polley and aired on CBC Television, the series asks whether Grace committed the crimes or was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Trivia about Alias Grace

The series' sets are decorated with public domain paintings from the Statens Museum for Kunst, Denmark's national gallery.

The prison scenes were filmed at Kingston Penitentiary in Ontario, where the real Grace Marks was once incarcerated.

The series was the third adaptation of an Atwood novel to air on television in 2017, after The Handmaid's Tale and Wandering Wenda.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 99% approval rating, with an average score of 8.01 out of 10 based on 79 reviews.

Ahead of its premiere, the first two episodes were screened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Sarah Gadon prepared her Northern Irish accent by listening to BBC Radio Ulster and asking acquaintances in Belfast to record script excerpts; she also studied Victorian domestic chores at Black Creek Pioneer Village.

Sarah Polley tried to obtain the adaptation rights as a teenager, but Margaret Atwood initially turned down the proposal because Polley had not yet directed a single film.

Polley first conceived «Alias Grace» as a feature film, but the project ended up as a six-episode miniseries with a script written entirely by her.
