Kim Basinger arrived in New York at age 17 with a suitcase full of doubts that didn't match her look. She didn't want to be a model, but she ended up signing with the Ford agency because bills have to be paid, and her face was a goldmine. Before long she was earning a thousand dollars a day posing for shampoo ads while dreaming of studying acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse.
That was the beginning of the end of her anonymity.
In 1976, she moved to Los Angeles to try her luck in television, landing small roles in series such as Harrelson's Men. Her big break came in 1983 when she became a Bond girl in Never Say Never Again. She worked alongside Sean Connery and proved she could hold her own against a film legend without blinking.
But her real breakout came in 1986 with 9 1/2 Weeks. The shoot was a psychological ordeal orchestrated by Adrian Lyne to make the tension between her and Mickey Rourke feel real. The film flopped at the U.S. box office, but it became a massive hit in Europe and typecast her in a archetype she would spend years trying to escape.
And the industry showed her no mercy.
In 1989, she made a decision that financial analysts still cite as an example of what not to do. She bought the town of Braselton, Georgia, for 20 million dollars with the idea of building a tourist resort and film studios. It was an absolute disaster, coinciding with a multimillion-dollar lawsuit for walking off the set of Mi obsesión por Helena.
She had to file for bankruptcy in 1993 after being ordered to pay more than eight million dollars to the production company.
Her career seemed over, but the script for L.A. Confidential crossed her path in 1997. Curtis Hanson had to push hard before she agreed to play Lynn Bracken, because she didn't want to play another object-of-desire role again. That performance earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and the Golden Globe.
It was the most powerful comeback of the decade.
In 2002, she filmed 8 Mile alongside Eminem, playing an unstable, vulnerable mother living in extreme poverty. It was one of her best performances, although critics focused more on the rapper's debut. From then on, her appearances became more selective and spaced out over time.
In the years that followed, she preferred to focus on animal rights activism and her private life. In 2010, she took part in the drama Always by My Side, and in 2013 she reunited with Robert De Niro in the boxing comedy The Big Comeback. She wasn't looking for sole leading roles, but for projects that allowed her to shoot without the pressure of major studios.
In 2017, she accepted the role of Elena Lincoln in Fifty Shades Darker. It was a purely commercial move that brought her back into international headlines after a long media silence. But she no longer played the Hollywood game by the same rules as in the eighties.
Her social phobia and agoraphobia have shaped many of her professional decisions since she began.
In 2023, she lent her voice and likeness to the character Casey in the action video game Crime Boss: Rockay City. She shared the digital cast with actors such as Michael Madsen and Danny Glover in a production that aimed to recreate the style of 1990s heist films. The project cost several million dollars and was recorded entirely in motion capture studios.
