The School Uniform Phenomenon

Koo Hye-sun nearly became a K-pop star.

Before television cameras made her a fixture of the public imagination, the South Korean star trained at YG Entertainment to join a girl group. But fate had other plans, and acting won out thanks to her photogenic looks and stage presence.

In 2004, she made her debut in the sitcom Nonstop 5. It was a modest start, but enough for producers to see something beyond the pretty face on the promotional posters of the time. Her first major leading role came in 2006 with the drama Pure in Heart, where her ability to connect with domestic audiences began to show.

Everything changed in 2009. The Korean adaptation of the manga Hana Yori Dango, titled Boys Over Flowers, reached TV ratings above 30% in South Korea. Koo played Geum Jan-di, and her face overnight started covering billboards in cities from Seoul to Manila.

The pressure on that shoot was brutal. The actress was in a car accident during production and needed several stitches in her mouth, but filming didn't stop in order to meet the broadcast deadlines. The physical exhaustion was evident in the series' final episodes.

And the gamble paid off.

Cameras, Brushes and Scores

Acting in front of other people's cameras was never enough for Koo Hye-sun. In 2008, she already dipped her toes into directing with the short film The Madonna, which premiered at several international festivals. It was a clear sign that her interest in the entire creative process always mattered more to her than conventional stardom.

She published her first novel, titled Tango, in 2009. It sold more than 30,000 copies in just one week.

Next came her first feature film as a director, Magic, in 2010. Specialized critics were not especially kind to her debut behind the camera (they faulted it for a lack of narrative cohesion), but she stood by her artistic vision and founded her own production company, called Koo Hye-sun Film.

In 2012, she directed The Peach Tree. For this film, she also composed the score and wrote the novel based on the original screenplay. She is a creator who needs to control every detail of what she puts her name to, from the first piano note to the color grading in the final cut.

Her career as a painter has also taken up much of her time away from the set. She has held exhibitions in cities such as Hong Kong and Paris, selling works whose proceeds are typically donated to various social and medical causes.

A Refuge at the Academy

Her personal life made headlines in the tabloid press in 2019 following an extremely high-profile divorce. That episode put her public activity on hold for months and sparked a bitter debate on social media about artists' privacy within the Korean entertainment system.

And she decided to go back to books.

In 2021, she presented her short film Dark Yellow. It was a project funded through a crowdfunding platform, and she handled the screenplay, direction and lead performance herself. The piece explored female fears from a raw visual perspective, far from the sweetness of her early television work.

Many thought her career would fade after her personal scandals, but Koo chose a path of intellectual resilience. She resumed her university studies with a discipline that surprised her own classmates.

In February 2024, she graduated with honors from Sungkyunkwan University after years of balancing filming with exams. She earned a grade point average of 4.27 out of 4.5 on her final academic record in the Theater Arts program.

She has no plans to leave film directing in the short term. Her latest art exhibition in 2024 featured a series of minimalist prints that sold out completely on the first day it opened to the public.
