Early Career on the Calgary Stage

Lara Gilchrist started out performing on Vancouver stages long before the voice-over industry came calling. Her voice was the first to bring the mutant X-23 to life in the animated series X-Men: Evolution back in 2003. That was no lucky break; it was the direct result of her technical training at Mount Royal University.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2007, she stepped into the role of Paulla Schaffer for the third season of Battlestar Galactica. It was a supporting role, but it taught her how big-budget science fiction productions really work. She wasn't chasing magazine covers or red carpets.

But steady work in television allowed her to pay the bills while she explored darker roles. In 2011, she starred in the horror film The Haunting of Sorority Row. The movie was shot in just fifteen days with a small crew and limited distribution to domestic markets.

The Refuge of Luxury Supporting Players

The Canadian industry runs like a engine that never stops for character actors. Gilchrist fit that mold with surgical precision. In 2009, she appeared in Smallville as the nurse Mary, and shortly after joined the cast of the sci-fi series Defying Gravity.

But the real money was in video games.

In 2006, she voiced Isabela Keyes in Dead Rising. The role opened doors in an industry that values vocal consistency over physical recognition. She recorded her lines during marathon sessions of motion and voice capture without the general public knowing who was behind the character.

In 2015, she appeared in The Man in the High Castle as Helen in a single episode. It was a work-for-hire job, one of many that fill the résumé of an actor who lives by the craft rather than by personal branding. In Vancouver's film industry, discretion is a survival tool.

Sundance and Closing the Circle

In 2020, she returned to video games with a technical role in The Last of Us Part II. It wasn't a leading role, but her name appears in the credits of one of the most expensive productions of the decade. The production employed more than 2,000 people over several years of intensive work.

Then came a change of style.

In 2024, she was part of the cast of the film Exhibiting Forgiveness, directed by Titus Kaphar. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival with a running time of 117 minutes. International distribution was finalized months later with figures that barely made it into the specialized press.

Filming of her scenes was completed in less than three weeks.
