Brian Drummond was born in Salmon Arm in 1969 and trained at the Studio 58 acting school. There, he learned that acting doesn't depend on the audience's eyes but on the intention of the larynx. Before turning thirty, he had already mastered the technique needed to sustain eight-hour recording sessions without wrecking his vocal cords.
In 1996, he took on the role of Vegeta for the Ocean Group dub of Dragon Ball Z. He wasn't the first actor in the part, but his delivery of the line about his rival's power level exceeded every commercial expectation. That three-second recording spawned a digital phenomenon that is still used today as a unit of measurement in internet culture.
That scream changed everything.
But Drummond never wanted to be just a martial arts villain. The Canadian dubbing market demanded performers who could jump between commercials and extreme animation in the same morning. So he began diversifying his range to keep the industry from typecasting him as the perpetual screamer.
The arrival of 2006 marked a major technical turning point in his career. In the series Death Note, he played Ryuk, a god of death with a cavernous voice and a laugh that demanded complete diaphragm control. The contrast with his earlier work was total. He achieved an organic, gritty texture that broke from the clean sound typical of cartoons of the era.
And the gamble paid off.
During this period, he also worked on the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED franchise, playing Andrew Waltfeld. By 1999, he had already shown his talent for mechanical science fiction in Beast Machines: Transformers, voicing Jetstorm. But his work on Death Note earned him a professional respect that went well beyond simply imitating strange voices.
Drummond sees the microphone as a precision instrument. He doesn't just read lines in a soundproof booth. He often uses his whole body to create incidental noises that sound technicians usually integrate into the final mix. This method allowed him to work nonstop for decades in an industry where generational turnover is fierce.
In 2011, he joined the cast of LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu. What seemed like a minor toy project grew into one of the longest productions of his career. He played several characters, but his steady presence in the LEGO brand gave him a financial stability that is rare for freelance voice actors.
The larynx has memory.
In 2022, he took part in Sonic Prime, playing multiple roles (including Dr. Eggman) and proving that age had not diminished his ability to hit high or highly theatrical notes. His breathing technique lets him sustain the energy needed for characters who demand exhausting physical effort during recording.
But success in dubbing isn't measured by awards alone. As of 2024, his professional record on IMDb exceeds 480 credits across animated series and video games. That places him among the top active professionals in Vancouver's industry. His latest contract for a Netflix production in 2025 confirms that his schedule remains booked months in advance.
