The business of a thousand voices

Ashleigh Ball makes a living with her voice box, ever since Vancouver became the major hub of North American animation. She isn't a typical red carpet star. Her face is hardly recognized at the supermarket, but her vocal cords have carried multimillion-dollar franchises for decades.

In 2010, she signed on to voice Rainbow Dash and Applejack in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. That decision meant years of managing the Bronies phenomenon. It was a cultural clash between the toy industry and an unexpected adult audience that nobody at Hasbro's offices saw coming.

And she handled it with enviable professional composure.

Before that breakout, she was already working nonstop on productions like Johnny Test in 2005. There she learned that in voice-over, technique matters more than inspiration. Giving a voice to a hyperactive kid takes diaphragm control that few on-camera actors ever manage to master in a lifetime.

In 2005, she co-founded the indie pop band Hey Ocean! with David Beckingham and David Vertesi. The group became her outlet from the rigid scripts of animation. They recorded albums such as It’s Easier to Be Somebody Else in 2008 and toured Canada in vans that smelled of cold coffee.

The discipline of the soundproof studio

The voice-over industry in Canada is small and insular, so Ball had to diversify her range to avoid saturating the market. In 2015, she took part in Beat Bugs, voicing characters who performed Beatles songs. It was a major technical challenge because of the demands of the original harmonies.

The microphone doesn't lie.

In 2017, she released her solo project with the EP Gold In You. It was a risky move, since animation audiences don't always connect with intimate pop. But she needed to separate the actress from the songwriter. Nothing in the songs carried over the high-pitched voices or rural accents that paid her bills.

During 2019, she focused on producing The Hollow for Netflix. In this mystery series, she showed she could handle much darker and more dramatic tones. Her voice dropped several pitches to suit a survival narrative that moved away from the lighter style typical of her career.

Music is her truth, and voice acting is her craft.

In 2021, she returned to her role in the revival of Johnny Test on new digital platforms. The recording technology had changed, but her ability to jump from one character to another in the same session remained intact. Producers value her speed, because in this business studio time is worth its weight in gold.

In 2023, she worked on the series Ready Jet Go!, maintaining her status as one of the most reliable voices in children's educational and entertainment programming. She isn't chasing critics' awards. Her biggest achievement is longevity in an industry that often burns through talent in less than five years.

By 2024, her recording sessions were mainly done with a Neumann U87 microphone in high-end studios in Vancouver. The technical specifications in her contracts now call for audio quality that allows immediate remote post-production. In 2025, the actress closed several contract renewals to keep lending her voice to long-running animated productions across North America.
