He lends a vocal texture that has defined animation over the past few decades, yet almost no one could pick him out of a crowd at a Vancouver supermarket. He was born in the United Kingdom, but his career took off in Canada when the voice-over industry was looking for voices with real dramatic weight.
In 1994 he voiced Enzo Matrix in ReBoot. The series was a risky technical experiment, since it was the first time television in three dimensions was produced on a mass scale. Dobson gave the character a maturity that set the show apart from conventional children's cartoons.
And the microphone was his first real stage.
He's part of a family of voice actors along with his brothers Michael and Brian. The three dominated the recording studios of Ocean Productions during the 1990s and early 2000s. But Paul always had the ability to sound both menacing and wise at the same time.
But massive success came with the dubbing of Dragon Ball Z. Dobson played Zarbon and Doctor Gero, bringing a dark elegance that didn't exist in the original Japanese versions. His baritone range let him move from the refined manners of Frieza's servant to the madness of a cyborg scientist.
In 2002 he took on the challenge of playing Naraku in Inuyasha. That role required him to keep a whispering, icy tone for years. English-speaking audiences quickly identified his voice with pure evil in anime.
No one can resist his baritone voice.
Unlike other actors who strain their throats to sound tough, he relies on the natural resonance of his chest. It's a technique of absolute breath control that lets him record eight-hour sessions without his voice wearing down in the slightest.
In 2006 he stepped into the role of Doctor Doom for Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes. It was a complex technical job, since he had to convey emotion through an imaginary metal mask. His performance moved away from the histrionic screaming of other actors and focused on restrained arrogance.
In 2011 he began playing Sensei Wu in Ninjago. What seemed like a minor project for a toy brand became his longest-running role. He has kept the part for more than a decade and recorded hundreds of episodes, blending dry humor with moral authority.
And that's where he stayed for good.
But not all of his work has been commercial animation. In 2018 he took part in The Dragon Prince, playing Viren. The script required him to shift from a loyal advisor to a power-hungry manipulator within a single scene. Dobson used long pauses and nearly imperceptible volume shifts to build the character.
In 2021 he voiced Arishem the Judge in Marvel Studios' Eternals. It was post-production work in which his voice was processed to sound like an entity the size of a planet. Paul Dobson has more than 300 credits in animation and video game productions, according to industry databases.
