Alessandro Juliani isn't the typical actor who chases the spotlight at any cost. He is a behind-the-scenes professional who built his career on an enviable technical foundation. During his training at McGill University, he graduated in vocal performance because his destiny seemed to lie in opera houses. His baritone range allowed him to move comfortably between musical theater and the Vancouver film sets.
The son of director John Juliani and actress Donna Wong-Juliani, his stage was the living room of his home. He grew up understanding that acting is not a matter of ego but of craft. That mindset helped him survive an industry that tends to devour those without a Plan B.
The year 2003 changed his career when he joined the cast of Battlestar Galactica. His role as Felix Gaeta started out as little more than an extra delivering technical lines on the ship's bridge. But the writers spotted a vulnerability in his gaze that wasn't in the original script. In 2008 he starred in one of the strangest moments in modern television when he sang a melancholy tune while his leg was being amputated on screen.
Music saved the character.
That performance of Gaeta’s Lament showed that his years at the conservatory had not been wasted. The producers decided to expand his role in the story until he became a key piece of the series finale in 2009. It was a restrained performance that allowed him to step away from the usual archetypes of military science fiction.
But mass recognition didn't come from his looks alone. In 2006 he voiced L in the English version of the anime Death Note, which made him a legend among fans of Japanese animation. Juliani sees voice acting as an extension of physical performance. He doesn't just read lines at a music stand, because he prefers to build the character's psychology from the breath up.
In 2009 he joined the series Smallville to play Dr. Emil Hamilton. He appeared in 14 episodes and brought a much-needed sobriety to a superhero universe of saturated colors. It was a restrained role that let him balance television with his theater projects in Canada (his true comfort zone).
It is his longest-running role to date.
Juliani has never been afraid of long-running projects. In 2014 he joined the cast of The 100 as Jacapo Sinclair and stayed attached to the production until 2017. His character's death was one of the most emotionally powerful moments for the show's fans. His ability to win over audiences with very little screen time is his greatest commercial asset.
In 2023 he appeared in the season one finale of The Last of Us, playing the chief surgeon of the Fireflies. Interestingly, he already knew the source material. In 2020 he voiced that same character in the video game The Last of Us Part II. Moving between formats is common in his career and shows that his voice is as valuable as his physical presence.
His bet on streaming kept paying off.
In 2024 he joined the cast of the Netflix series Avatar: The Last Airbender as Shinu. Despite the changes in the industry, Juliani keeps a steady schedule at Vancouver studios. His contract for this project was closed under the terms of the Canadian union UBCP/ACTRA with a standard Level A production rate.
