Lee Dong-wook debuted in 1999 after winning a model contest for the V-NESS brand. He was eighteen, with a gaze he had not yet learned to control in front of the camera. His first real screen opportunity came with the teen drama School 2.
In those early years, his looks shaped the scripts that reached his desk. But the commercial turning point came in 2005 with My Girl. That TV series put him on the map of hit productions across Asia and defined his leading-man image for nearly a decade.
And the international market reacted immediately.
After completing mandatory military service between 2009 and 2011, the actor returned to an industry that was no longer the same. Audiences wanted darker stories and flawed characters. In 2014 he starred in Hotel King, playing a manager tormented by his past. It was a 32-episode production that demanded a level of emotional intensity that eventually wore down his patience with traditional melodrama.
In 2016, he accepted a supporting role that turned out to be the smartest move of his career. He played the Grim Reaper in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. The role let him step away from the conventional romantic lead label and explore a drier, more cynical register.
The audience response was massive.
That project served as a catalyst for her next creative choices. In 2019, she took a risk with Strangers from Hell. In this adaptation of a webtoon, she played a psychopathic dentist who manipulated his neighbors in a rundown apartment building. It was the first time Korean critics praised her ability to create unease without relying on big gestures.
By 2020, the actor already had a firm grasp of how the industry worked and immersed himself in the world of Tale of the Nine Tailed. He played a mythological being in a contemporary setting. The project had such an impact that in 2023 a prequel titled Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 was filmed, where physical action replaced much of the original romantic storyline.
But the definitive change of pace came in 2024.
In the series A Shop for Killers in 2024, he played a mysterious uncle who runs an arms depot for mercenaries. The shoot required intensive training in firearms handling and hand-to-hand combat. The production used Arri Alexa 35 cameras to capture the texture of the fight sequences in enclosed spaces, and the per-episode budget exceeded standard levels for Korean cable television.
King Kong by Starship has managed his schedule for years under an exclusive contract that was last renewed in 2022.
