Im Gi-hong is not the typical Korean TV heartthrob. His face became familiar to the general public after he had already spent decades on the stages of Seoul's musical theater. Born on November 14, 1975, his training did not come from model agency casting calls but from sweat on stage in productions such as The Play in 2003. He spent more than fifteen years perfecting control over his gestures before a high-definition camera ever zeroed in on him.

In 2009, he had a brief appearance in the film Secret, but film remained a secondary field for him. By then, he was already a respected actor on the Daehangno stages, and his priority was direct contact with audiences. The technique he developed in theater allowed him to build characters with a very aggressive physicality.

And the leap into the unknown took a while to come.

The South Korean entertainment industry tends to look for young faces for its major productions. Im Gi-hong broke that mold by entering his mature years with a physical energy that few method actors manage to sustain. His role in the series Extracurricular in 2020 permanently changed the course of his career.

The Face of Crime on Streaming

In Extracurricular, he played Ryu Dae-yeol, a violent gangster who ran a nightclub. It was an exhausting physical role that required a mix of brutality and pathos. But his part in Squid Game in 2021 is what gave him international visibility as player number 276. Although his screen time in the Netflix series was limited, his presence in the tug-of-war challenge was essential to the group's tension.

The industry didn't hand him anything.

In 2021, he also worked on My Name, bringing to life a drug manufacturer with an erratic and dangerous personality. His characters tend to live on the fringes of the law because Im Gi-hong has a natural ability to unsettle viewers with his gaze. Many directors seek him out when they need someone who can shift from dark comedy to psychopathy in an instant.

In 2022, he appeared in The Sound of Magic, and a year later he joined the cast of the big-budget production Gyeongseong Creature. This period drama, set in 1945, allowed him to explore a more dramatic register within a horror and suspense narrative.

Mature Projects and Numbers

In Gyeongseong Creature, he played a key character at Ongseong Hospital during the final months of the Japanese occupation. The series returned for a second season released in 2024, in which the actor kept his importance to the plot. His value on set doesn't depend on the number of lines he has but on the intensity of his action scenes.

His characters tend to live on the fringes of the law.

By 2024, his schedule was filled with titles such as The Judge from Hell, where he played Yang Seung-bin in several key episodes. He is an actor who rarely turns down supporting roles if the script offers a technical challenge in physical acting or requires complex fight choreography. That's why his name now appears in the credits of the most expensive productions on Korean television.

At the end of 2024, he had more than forty official credits across film and television. His contract for the series The Fiery Priest 2 was signed under strict confidentiality conditions regarding his character arc and the number of episodes contracted.
