Ryu Kyung-soo doesn't look like a romantic comedy leading man. His jaw is too angular and his stare too sharp for the standards of Seoul's agencies. In 2013, he made his debut with a small role in the film Pluto, and from that moment on it was clear his place was on the fringes of the story.
He studied theater at Chung-Ang University, where he learned that control of the body matters more than the voice itself. Before filming, he reads the script a dozen times and notes every gesture in the margins. But his real training comes from the stage, where a mistake can't be edited out.
The industry stopped seeing him as just another supporting actor.
In 2020, the project that changed his public profile arrived. He played Choi Seung-kwon in the series Itaewon Class. He was an ex-convict seeking redemption while working at a bar. Nearly five million viewers followed his journey week after week on Korean television. And he did it without resorting to the usual tricks of melodramatic tearjerkers.
Because Ryu Kyung-soo prefers restraint. He knows that a well-timed blink says more than a three-page monologue. So he used that momentum to choose projects that moved away from the most obvious commercial circuit.
Director Yeon Sang-ho saw something in him that others overlooked. In 2021, he recruited him for the series Hellbound and gave him a role that demanded absolute coldness. Ryu Kyung-soo accepted the challenge without complaint. For him, acting isn't about showing off in front of the camera but about disappearing within the frame.
Nobody expected his presence to be so physical.
In 2023, he took part in the science fiction film Jung_E. It was a complex shoot filled with green screens and motion sensors. He had to repeat an action sequence fourteen times because of a technical failure in the motion capture system. The film's budget exceeded 15 million dollars, and much of the tension rested on his interaction with digital elements.
In 2024, he starred in The Bequeathed. His character is a man suffocated by the past who barely speaks in the first episodes. But his body language carries the entire mystery plot. And that is his greatest strength. He doesn't need the audience's easy applause to validate his work on set.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2022, he worked on the thriller Confession, and the film grossed 5.3 million dollars in its domestic market. The contract for that production included an eighteen-month confidentiality clause covering the twist ending. Filming his scenes was concentrated into just three weeks of intensive indoor shooting.
