Lee Rodriguez was born in Fresno in late 1999. Long before stepping onto a television set, she already knew what it meant to pose in front of a professional camera through her work as a model. But acting wasn't in her original plans when she began building a life in Los Angeles.
Fresno felt too small for her very early on.
In 2018 she landed her first credited role in the series Class of Lies. It was a quiet entry into the industry that barely caught the attention of specialized critics. Shortly afterward she appeared in an episode of Grown-ish playing Naomi. That hands-on experience taught her how a sitcom's rhythm worked before she took on her first major contract.
The casting for Never Have I Ever in 2019 proved decisive for her career. Mindy Kaling was looking for performers who would break the mold of traditional teen comedy, and Rodriguez auditioned for the role of Fabiola Torres. The character required a mix of social awkwardness and above-average technical intelligence.
And the gamble paid off.
Over the four seasons filmed between 2020 and 2023, the actress brought to life a robotics-savvy student navigating her sexual identity in a high-pressure academic environment. More than 40 million households watched the show's first season in its first month on air. This level of viewership put her on the radar of major on-demand content producers right away.
Filming this production meant 12-hour days at Universal's studios in California. Rodriguez had to learn the basics of mechanical engineering so that her scenes in the robotics club would look convincing on camera. But her interest in technology was not just a demand of the script.
Off set, the actress devotes much of her time to music composition. In 2020, she released her first single, Her, a track that blends alternative pop with soul influences. She personally oversees the arrangements of her songs because she prefers to keep creative control over her sound.
Unlike others from her generation, Rodriguez avoids overexposure at social events unless there is a compelling professional reason. She prefers the recording studio to the noise of the red carpets in Los Angeles. In 2021, she released the track Don't Tell Me, in which she explored a much more experimental side.
Her move into film came in 2024 with her role in the movie The Prank. On this project she shared the cast with Rita Moreno under the direction of Maureen Bharoocha. The shoot ran on a tight budget and a production schedule that required completing scenes in record time.
In 2024, The Prank wrapped its international distribution with a 15 rating in the British market for its dark humor.
